What would happen?

Does opening up the drivers "reveal architectual details" about them that another company could use?

Aren't cpu's Open implementations ? And yet there is no fear that someone else will "steal ideas" right?

If graphic drivers were open... would regular developers be able to contribute to make them better? Or does it require a particular expertise that not as many would be able to contribute?

What are the chances of Nvidia or ATI going open source for their drivers? What would be the benefits to us, and to them ? What would be the con to them if they opened them up ?
