I thought that Community Cafe readers might be amused to learn that there's a new combination restaurant/yoga studio named Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntunapa.com) on Main Street in Napa, California. They open next Monday, August 20th.

Wait isn't there some kind of trademark or so on the Ubuntu name and Logo?

well, ubuntu is just a word really, so i guess only the logo which they don't use, so there's no issue.

But Microsoft is also only a word or McDonalds and I don't think I can use those names for my projects or companys.
Let's see if I can find any information on that.
EDIT: That was easy, on the mainpage of Ubuntu:

© 2007 Canonical Ltd. Ubuntu and Canonical are registered trademarks of Canonical Ltd.

I find it vaguely amusing that my Ubuntu loads faster than their webpage...

Let's not start copyrighting language.

I think that you can use the same name as long as you're in different fields. That's why there is the Apple computer company, and the Apple music company (started by the Beatles I believe). And they coexisted without any problems until the computer Apple started pushing into the music industry.

I was going over some of my magazines and I found in an article (sorry no link that I could find) talking about "green" restaurants. And one of them was named "Ubuntu". The restaurant site is here: http://www.ubuntunapa.com.
Sorry no mention of the OS. :)

you get fat from the resto and work it off at the yoga studio. you get hungry from the yoga and grab a bite at the resto... it's a win-win situation.

In case anyone's curious, I actually ate at this restaurant last week. Pictures of it at my blog (http://ubuntucat.wordpress.com/2008/06/28/eating-at-ubuntu/).

There are no warthogs, hedgehogs, badgers, drakes, efts, fawns, gibbons, herons, or ibexes on the menu. It's a vegetarian restaurant.

Their website has the (crappy) Nelson Mandela interview (with the Ubuntu logo at the bottom right) that comes with Ubuntu.
Their website's colors scheme closely resembles that of the Ubuntu site.
Coinkidink? I think not.
One of the store owners/designers/whatever must use Ubuntu Linux.

What the hell is "vegan cheese"? Besides a chimera, that is. If it's cheese, it's made from milk. Animal milk. If it's not made from milk, it's not cheese.

Well, it may be a trademark for an OS, but the word is used before the foundation of this OS, after all it is an ancient zulu word. One example would be this (http://www.ubuntu.upc.edu/), which exists since the year 2000~2001 (at least 3~4 years before the birth of our OS). So a vegetarian restaurant using the word is no problem.

I lol'd. :D

But seriously, their web page has a nice theme. Ubuntu must steal it for Intrepid! White/wood. Nice.

And Trinity College in Connecticut has an Alchemy Juice Bar with very similar offerings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_College_(Connecticut)#Restaurants):

...Alchemy serves 100% organic vegetarian and vegan food and drink, including smoothies, sandwiches, soups, and coffee. The small restaurant also has an oxygen bar and hosts yoga lessons.

I wanna try their oxygen bar :O

It's either made from Soy or Rice or something like that.

That video of Nelson Mandela talking about the meaning of the word ubuntu looks suspiciously much like the video that is included with our Ubuntu OS. Did they steal that video from Canonical's Ubuntu?

Wait a minute, it is Canonical's video, with the Ubuntu logo in it!

Really strange. I wonder if Canonical is going to talk to them about this.

Canonical did not make that video. They took it out of an interview that was on tv.

Tofu has existed for hundreds of years and is called "bean curd" or "bean cheese" in Asia. My local supermarket has soy milk, soy cheese, rice milk ice cream, wheat gluten breakfast sausage, etc.

Some people choose not to eat meat or drink milk, and this thread happens to be about a vegetarian restaurant. Can you try and respect that instead of being argumentative?

A step out of your reality and into mine:

I can neither care less what people eat nor why they choose to eat it. If you'll take that chip off of your shoulder and read what I wrote without injecting your biases into it, you'll see that my issue is not about anyone's dietary habits but about nomenclature. If it's cheese, it's not vegan. If it's vegan, it's not cheese; it's a cheese substitute. And yes, I have the same issue with Head Cheese.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled reality, already in progress.

No worries, I am not mad at you, and I'm not even a vegan. We're cool! :)

And yes, I also have issues with Head Cheese, so we can agree on that at least! :lolflag:
