I Was thinking about the names of Ubuntu releases and while fun to say they are not very serious. I think if Ubuntu has different names it have a mature persona.
My idea was to name them after cities. that way you still have the idea that ubuntu is for everyone because each new version would have a differant city in the globe
i.e.
Ubuntu Shanghi
Ubuntu Dublin
Ubuntu Tokyo

Believe it or not the names are only there to reference the project before release. Once released, it becomes its vers#: 6.06LTS, 6.10, 7.04 etc.... Similar to Vista or Server 2007 being called 'Longhorn' and an Intel processor being called 'Prescott'...

I like the names personally. They give the releases a bit more identity than just a release number.
More serious release names like Macs use seem a bit cheesy to me.

I'm resisting the temptation to poke fun at "Ubuntu Glasgow" ;)

This would be a good idea if we did not have to take intelligence into consideration.

I like that they are given silly names because Linux gives me an opportunity to have some fun with my computer. Official sounding names make me think of rigidity. I'm all about a good time.

Hey we can name it after deadly stalking animals like apple. Then we can build a shrine around Mark and cry at his keynotes where he announces:
UBUNTU 8.10 Spinosaurus
9.04 Velociraptor
Then on our site we can have a raptor eye in a dark setting and scale background.
Hey lets not do that. Lets stick with the goofy names like:HUNGRY HIPPOS which is awesome as hell.

That has to be the name of the next release (provided it's not covered by copyright or something)!

The Ubuntu people should have a Naming Contest about the future versions. Grande Giraffe and Nifty Ninja -- those would be cool names

Here's a few alternate suggestions from the wife and I on a quiet Saturday night:
irritating ibex
jaunty jackass
kinky kangaroo
limping llama
moping marsupial
nifty newt
ostentatious oryx
perspicacious penguin
quirky quail
raunchy rattlesnake
sensational salamander
torpid turtle
undulating urial
voracious velociraptor
whispering wombat
there is only one X animal ... xenops ... but I like ...
xenophobic xenops
yammering yorkie
zonked zorilla
