"Real Desktop" - Does something similar exist for Linux?

I just stumbled upon this (http://www.real-desktop.de/English/index.htm). Its a 3d Desktop for Windows that presents you a "real" Desktop and all the files on your desktop lie as little tiles on your desktop. Its kinda hard to explain. So just check out their screenshots (http://www.real-desktop.de/English/Screenshots.htm).

So Im curious if theres something similar for Linux.

we might not have anything much like this yet... at least something that is in working condition.
but if windows can do it you know someones gonna tear it apart till it works here too sooner or later.

Yeah, there've been a couple of threads for it in UbuntuForums.

And hey, I like mess. I can actually find stuff when it looks like that, as opposed to when I spend time organizing in reallife.

I think such stuff are a terrible waste of resources, unless you have just bought that 5000£ latest alienware pc. But even then I wouldn't do that to my pc. Installing such desktop enhancements I mean.

Additonally, it's a concept and not something that's in production, much less ready for the general public to use.

I also think that it's an interesting concept but a usability nightmare. There'd have to be some kind of revolution in OS design to make that a viable system.

I used it, after bashing prematurely in the Cafe. It is not unusable, and is in fact, quite easy and handy to use. The videos play with its features, so it looks like a nightmare, but using it is easy.

I use Fluxbox, and have no icons, panels or anything on the desktop, and a 2d black/white theme, so I am an extreme minimalist, but if one likes a desktop with icons, Real desktop is worth trying.

Based on a quick Google search, no.

A "Real Desktop" is one where the icons can be moved around, thrown, stacked, etc, similar to how you can move papers around on a desk in reallife.

Oh, and.. How would this be a resource hog, but Beryl/Compiz Fusion not? ;)
