Hello to everyone in the Ubuntu forums!
I want to know about soccer in the Ubuntu community. Do you like this sport? Do you play it? What's your favourite team?

I like soccer, my favourite team is Boca Juniors (http://www.bocajuniors.com.ar/english/)
I like FC Barcelona and Chelsea too.

Sure, I wouldn't say I'm a soccer fanatic but I go watch 2-3 games of my favourite team Parma ( http://www.fcparma.com/it/ ) every year. The team hasn't been doing too well lately but well, it's the team of the city I was born in. I used to play when I was little and still play occasionally, unfortunately I don't have much time now.

Use the proper name please. What's up with you north Americans calling it soccer? You call "rugby with pads" football and you almost never uses your feet to kick the bloody thing!

In mostly all parts of the world but yours it's called football, cause you know it is football, which means that you have to use your feet to play it.

But to answer your question, of course I love the game, most of the world do. My favorite teams are one of the Gothenburg (Sweden) teams called GAIS but Swedish football is kind of slow and I prefer to watch the English premier league, Newcastle GO GO!!!

Don't turn this into thread to bash us Americans for playing Football (American football). Do you think any one person can change the name? I've lived in Europe for almost 10 years now and I can't believe how many times I've heard this nonsense. Who cares what we call it.. even if it doesn't make sense..

It absolutely wasn't my meaning to bash you north Americans (south Americans use the proper name of the game :)). It was a honest question. Why have your country "renamed" football to soccer? to me that just doesn't make any sense, since it's called football anywhere else. I have wondered about this on several occasions when talking to some north Americans that live near by me (they didn't know),

So if my post felt in some way hostile to you, is was not my intent and for that I'm sorry.

I love football :D

My fantasy football team is winning all 3 leagues i am in atm - even at the top of my public league :)

I either want to see west ham, man U, newcastle or everton win this season - i like all 4 teams. Sir alex fergeson is not playing a very good team this year, i don't know why but Anderson and nani are not in the starting team for some odd reason - both players are as good or better than C.ronaldo - good to see tevez starting up.

I like what Sven has done with man.c, the team is playing well and they are doing very very well defensively.

Pompy played well vs bolton on saturday, a very good game.

The game came from england - and we call it FOOTBALL, its not soccer because the US calls it soccer and their rugby rip off football. 99% of people that follow the game will call it football, most people that don't will call it football, soccer is an American slang for it and not its correct name.

No worries. American style football was the only sport being played back then. Not too sure why we call it soccer.. never made sense to me but its just our way. On a national level our American style football is much more popular. Actually my brothers and I grew up playing soccer ("football") on the regional and international level. I was on the U16 International team and my brother replaced me the following year.. both of us played on the Olympic development teams.. Both brothers gave it up during college.. I stopped when I started working overseas.. not enough time..

I prefer basketball, but the level of the sport is so ridiculous here in Portugal that it's hard to be a fan. In terms of NBA I'm a Golden State Warriors fan (and have been since 1991).

Regarding football, I was at Benfica's Champions League match vs. FC København. And after that, I'll tell you... it's no accident Fernando Santos was sacked. Now that Camacho is back to Benfica, the future seems somewhat brighter.

Manchester United for about 20 years now. Houston Dynamo MLS and the local Portland Timbers. Soccer Football Futbol it doesn't what it is called. It is the Beautiful Game.....and it should probably be referred to as American football. Another thing that has bothered me for a long time Why do we call the World Series when it is nothing more than the American baseball championship. It would be nice to see something like the World Cup for baseball.

I was a bit to slow and got my answer while writing this.

Soccer comes from a corruption of Association Football. Phrase coined in the 19th Century to distinguish the Football Association game from the variety of rules then in existence, particularly Rugby Football . (There were many schools and Universities playing by their own rules, Cambridge, for instance, ) .
Rugby Football became just Rugby, while 'Soccer' became the more commonly played football rules and therefore became commonly known as football .

At school (in the 1970's) we still used the term Soccer quite often as we did not play it at school, we played Rugby Football !

I am a football fanatic. My favourite team is Steaua Bucharest, the most famous Romanian Football club, winners of the European Champions Cup (overhauled to Champions Leage) in 1986.

Football is probably the most pleasant sport to watch. Americans who have never witnessed a clash between two popular teams should visit one of the Champions League matches, or a derby in Argentina, Turkey, England, Brazil, Italy, or Greece. The show put up by the attendance will probably not compare to anything you have ever felt. Imagine thousands of people, cheering up for 90 minutes, singing, wearing the colours of their favourite football club... It just makes your skin crawl.

In the US, going to a basketball match is more like enjoying a social evening. It really doesn't matter who wins or who loses. People cheer when they're told to cheer. Teams never leave the NBA for lower leagues because of a poor performance in a given season. In Europe or South America, there are thousands of teams, in hundreds of leagues, and each year some go up and some go down. There is a chance for everyone.

Here's some videos worth watching, they might be more expressive than my words:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNe85z6nqrI - thousands of Fenerbahce fans jumping and singing at the same time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-Awbw0MyJM - Fans of River Plate, waiting to enter the stadium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCn-8MB-v5U Liverpool fans singing the famous "YOu'll Never Walk Alone"

later edit: if you still think Americans know how to enjoy basketball better than the Europeans, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0rMe2Vyb9E&search=PAO%20ultras

As to why American football is called football despite not really featuring the feet, American football descended from Canadian football, which descended from rugby football. Of course, every step along the way involved rule changes.

In the US, going to a basketball match is more like enjoying a social evening. It really doesn't matter who wins or who loses. Pretty much sums it up, compare a goal celebration to a scoring a basket. Goals tend to be memorable everyone has their favorites (heres mine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zklt914QNYE)) where as in basketball unless its some michael jordan move, the slam dunks, alley hoop and 3 pointers are all the same and are less significant as of the high scoring nature.

perhaps we should start a new thread titled 'your favorite goal'

I agree soccer is football.

However there seems to be a simple reason why Americans call it soccer:
because they can't have 2 games called the same.

The good question would be: why did they call it FOOTball in the first place?

BTW anyone knows why they chose to call it soccer as opposed to (making it up)...boot ball or whatever?

From wikipedia on history of American Football:

The origins of American football probably date to the early 1800s when teams from various colleges and secondary schools (necessarily from the Eastern part of the United States because established institutions of learning existed only in that region at the time) met to attempt to move an inflated ball past a line to gain points. This movement was usually achieved by kicking or batting at the ball, as in soccer.

Man, it was good to see Peyton Manning play the whole first quarter in the Colts pre-season game last night. I'm getting pretty stoked about the regular season.

The thing that made me mad is that the announcers spent the whole time talking about Michael Vick and his dog fighting ordeal. They didn't act like there was a game going on at all. I thought announcers were supposed to announce what's going on in a game.

I've used "soccer" because American members could think that this topic talks about American football.

I have got another question. How popular is South American soccer/football in Europe?
I've watched Argentine Football matches in a Chinese TV, and I watch Brazilian Football (I like Corinthians). I want to be a "relator" (I don't know how to say it in English, maybe "narrator"), a special kind of sports journalist who narrates what is happening during the game.
He is one of the best "relatores" is Víctor Hugo Morales, who was born in Uruguay and works in Argentina. I know that English members will hate me :P (I'm sorry), but This link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiYYSradplU) will show you a video of a Maradona's Goal narrated by V. H. Morales.

to put it bluntly, no, and if I did, it's barely televised here, one would have to get satellite or digital cable to watch all the matches. All the ones on cable are on the five or six Spanish channels.

Even now that MLS has the legendary David Beckham, he's been overshadowed with the Michael Vick controversy, Tom Brady's newborn, Barry Bonds's ungrateful breaking of the greatest sports records of all time among other things.

Owen has always scored in games against us, he is a great player.

Technically the game was a draw, you went through to the next round on penalties. Besides we won the last two. \\:D/

And yes I do like Argentinian and Brazilian football,I love seeing great goals even if sometimes we are on the wrong end of them. ;)

I read the title to this thread and the first thinkk I thought was "U-Oh, here we go"

Firstly yes it's football not soccer and to prove how irritating it is to have some ponces in another country rename your national sport I've started calling "American Football" kermit-ball, "Baseball" is now glovie and Basketball is now bouncie-squeek.

I'll obviously correct anyone that tries to refer to any American sports game as to their new names even though I have no business doing so. If you want to distinguish kermit-ball from football you can use the phrase "Real Football", people using the word soccer will be shot on site.

i've changed the title of the thread from "do you like soccer". not everyone knows what "soccer" is, but everyone knows what football is. so seeing as this is an international forum, i decided to make things understandable to a wider audience. most folk on this forum are not from the states.

While I agree that American football needs a better name, there are good historical reasons for the name. Ever heard of rugby football? The term "soccer" was actually coined by the English.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soccer#Names_of_the_game

Of course, another way to remove all doubt is to simply refer to soccer as fútbol.

No one outside the united states has a professional team no one outside the united states watches the other game on a regular basis, no one outside the united states could name teams players of the other game no one outside the united states covers the other sport in the media no one outside the united states gives two *****. The other sport is miniscule and not worth mentioning on the world stage compared to Football. Both Rugby and Cricket are bigger than the other sport.

Please don't quote someone from the UK and ask him if he has heard of Rugby Football it's like someone outside the united states asking you if you have heard of Mickey Mouse or mcdonalds.

I never witnessed it live but i was sobbing all the same......:)

For me though.......Home is where the Hearts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_midlothian) is.

I`m actually a bit closer to the Lions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millwall_fc) now-a-days although i dont actually support them..

I think it's been mentioned before in this thread, but don't blame us Americans for using a term the British came up with (http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,420024,00.html) as a name for the game. Football or soccer, it's the same game - having a snobby attitude about what it's called doesn't help any.

As far as teams go, I was a follower of the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS until the owners thought it'd be fun to sabatoge the team and then move them to Houston. Sorta happy to hear the team's being revived for next year.

Keep in mind that British English isn't the only dialect of English. What's correct in UK English isn't necessarily correct in American English, or Canadian English, or Australian English--or vice versa. And arguing that one dialect is superior to another would be bigoted.

If you're in the UK, the proper term is football. If you're in the US, the proper term is soccer--just like in most of the English-speaking world the correct spelling is colour, while in the US it's color. They're different dialects.

Oh, by the way: The name for the sport in non-English-speaking countries is irrelevant. This discussion is about the correct English name for the sport, not the proper Spanish, etc. name.

I enjoy watching/playing pretty much any sport.
I follow Minnesota teams.
Never got much out of watching soccer until my kids played and I learned more about the game. Now it is enjoyable to watch even with very low scores.

Before I get bashed for calling it soccer just remember I'm from the U.S. I grew up in a time that very little soccer was played here. It has gotten more and more popular here and one or two more generations and it will be a big sport here too.

But as ridiculous as calling football a name like soccer sounds to some people calling soccer a name like football sounds ridiculous to me.
But, that being said... I really don't care what anyone calls a certain sport.

My only question is with how popular soccer is in the rest of the world why did Beckham come to the U.S. to play? Is he washed up over there and just came for the money he was offered here?

Use the proper name please. What's up with you north Americans calling it soccer? You call "rugby with pads" football and you almost never uses your feet to kick the bloody thing!

In mostly all parts of the world but yours it's called football, cause you know it is football, which means that you have to use your feet to play it.

But to answer your question, of course I love the game, most of the world do. My favorite teams are one of the Gothenburg (Sweden) teams called GAIS but Swedish football is kind of slow and I prefer to watch the English premier league, Newcastle GO GO!!!

We also call the finals of our national pastime the World Series even though the only eligible participants are American + 1 Canadian team.
