I think the author of it (RYX or RXY? I think it's RXY) said that you only need to water it once a day on the Compiz forums.

maybe you just have to wait just like how a normal flower grows by taking it's time lol :)

Leave your computer by a window. Flowers need sunlight.

Well, with Windows you get a lot of fertilizer, and that would be good for your flower.

Finally got this thing to grow...ok I have a stem but that counts!

I started with a fresh flower screenlet and watered it once on the first day. On day two, I watered it once in the morning. By night time on day two, it had a few roots. Once i saw the roots growing out of the pot, I quit (not delete) the screenlet. I added the flower screenlet once again and to my surprise, the pot that had only roots became a pot with a beautiful green stem! HAHA!

Check it out!

mind if i ask where i could download that wallpaper? it looks quite groovy.

i might have a go at growing a flower myself. hopefully the type of lower can be chosen. i would choose a nice blue gentian.
i may even do a Prince Charles and talk to the thing to encourage it to grow :D.

Thanks! I have installed an ubuntustudio look and feel via Synaptic Package Manager. I believe the package that I installed was called ubuntustudio-wallpapers but it was a while ago.

Try this link as well: http://www.73lab.com/main/display.php?src_pic=http://peoples.mandriva.com/~ayo/distant_file/dessins/wallpaper/0507-ubuntustudio-wallpaper-1600x1200.png

If that doesn't work, try a Google image search for: ubuntustudio wallpaper ayo

LOL a flower on the desktop? What a great idea! :D

I don't have the newest Ubuntu installed yet but is this something that comes with Compiz? Are the screenlets easily installed from the standard repos?

What I did was watered it once and then left my computer on for 24 hours straight, then I saw it starting to grow. :)

i finally got some growth. what i did was leave my computer on all weekend and watered it once every 24 hours. but then i turned it off for the night and its now frozen at an awkward stage.

do you have to leave the computer on all the time for this danged thing to work right?

FuturePilot
March 27th, 2008, 09:55 PM
I guess so. Or keep track of your uptime so that you don't end up watering it more than once per 24 hours.

April 4th, 2008, 12:29 AM
Hey, I was thinking that this thing needed some way to keep track of the days... and i found the Flower1.ini file which has information about it... the problem is that... the age, which is supposed to be the days the flower has lived is always 1, so my flower is always 1 day old each time i turn on my computer i guess that's why you guys got it to grow if you didn't turn your computer off.

And lots of water, preferably over the keyboard.

I don't think so but you would have to find a way to keep track how long your computer was on over a period of time so that it doesn't go over a total of 24 hours without a watering.

Well, I asked RYX long time ago abut this....:)

His answer.....

He he he :P ...

Create a new line after line 127, containing "return True" ... And set the day_length in line 55 to something more sane (currently it is set to 24 hours). Then it becomes a radioactive flower and doesn't need water anymore ...

sudo gedit /usr/share/screenlets/Flower/FlowerScreenlet.py

This code is open-source and therefore can be hacked.....:guitar:

or you can modify the Flower.ini file
(it's in $HOME/.config/Screenlets/Flower/default)
just add this code:

state=1

you can choose a number between 0 and 8 (0 is nothing; 8 is the full flower)

It may help if you stop the flower before you edit the file and start it again, because otherwise it will overwrite your changes.

2 things

1) what's and applet
2) I have the same problem with my flower. it won't grow

I have changed the source file in order to eliminate the need of 24 hours up time in order for the flower to get to the next state. I have added a method that increments the passed time at every 10 minutes and writes it in the .ini file, such that on resume the count continues from there.

The rest of the behavior is unchanged. After 24 hours ( not necessarily continuous ) the flower will advance to the next state.

Of course, all the credit for this great screenlet and my respect go to the author RYX (aka Rico Pfaus) <ryx@ryxperience.com>. I have just made a little modification for which he probably didn't had time.

Just open "usr/share/screenlets/Flower" as root and replace the FlowerScreenlet.py with the one from the attached archive. Then start the flower and wait for it to grow :).

Open as root from terminal:

sudo nautilus /usr/share/screenlets/Flower/

Enjoy.

I know this thread is old, but, only i want to say that the numbers between you can choose are from 0 to 6, like before 0 is nothing, and 6 the full flower ;)
