View Full Version : Should this thread be banned?

One of the biggest issues in Linux land - as anyone who enters it knows - is the approach towards 'noobs'. Some distros/forums (eg Gentoo) have a reputation for being very noob unfriendly; others - most notably this one, have a reputation for being very 'noob' friendly. Personally, I think this is a good thing.

I've recently been spending some time on a lot of other forums, and the perception of this one seems to be that its very friendly, but has a lot of 'noobs' on it (whatever a 'noob' is, I have to say that I don't really know to be honest, but there you go). So - I started a thread to test the level (or rather the non-level) of elitism in the Ubuntu forums - here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=522423

...and it got banned!!

One of the major issues in the world of Linux....and we're not allowed to discuss it!

Perhaps I should also say that the Ubuntu forums also have a reputation in other forums for over-zealous modding - about which I should say no more.

I think the only thing 'wrong' with the thread perhaps, was that I didn't outline the context of my thinking. But should it be banned?

As Pricey told you in your thread, everyone is welcome here, regardless of the knowledge level, and anyone who despises another person due to lack of knowledge is infracting the Code of Condut. That pretty much answers your question so there's no point in disussing that issue further.

I absolutely agree entirely. But I don;t see what the issue is? Is anyone afraid that lots of people will vote 'yes I hate noobs', and thus have a mass violation of the code of conduct? Personally I don;t think that will happen. Do you? Is banning open discussion the answer?

I never saw the thread before, but upon looking at it this time, my first impression is that it was a supid and bigoted post.......IMHO

How? I ask in the spirit of genuine inquiry, and not out of defensiveness. I said nothing in the thread that was bigoted, and have stated that I don't 'hate noobs' in any way. If everyone else thinks it was a crap thread, then fair enough - I'm big enough to accept it - but can someone please explain, since I can't see anything 'bigoted' about it.

I agree that thread should have been closed. As a matter of fact, I think it should have been sent to the Jail.

Of course, I'm just an overzealous moderator, so what do I know?

Well, to tell you the truth, I personnally would not have closed your thread so wait for Pricey to come and tell you why he did it.

(I move this to the Resolution Center, it has nothing to do here.)

I would have closed it as well, everyone starts of green so to speak.

Well I'm still green, so to speak.
According to Pricey, the reason was that it could potentially attract flamebait. He has a point. I should have contextualised my thinking behind the question. I did go back to do this, but by then the thread was closed.

You Fascists! ;)

I had sympathy for your point of view right up to the last line of your post above.

You just shot yourself down in flames:(

Fair enough.

Its hard in the sterile web to convey feeling.

I do see what you were attempting to say here and i will think on it.

In retrospect I would have left it out. But there you go.
Sorry.

Yo chose a wrong way to asses the 'noob' friendliness of the forum IMO. A better way would have been to post a very noobish question or two and from that evaluate how members react to noobs.

Well it was meant as a discussion piece, rather than a personal curiosity item. I've posted plenty of 'noob' questions on this forum, so I know what I think about it.

Those two statements ^^ do not convey :

I totally support the staffs action with the thread in question because of the way it had been composed.

If you were trying to gauge the attitude of Members to beginners there is far better ways to ask , and far better Adjectives to use .
Your choice of words for your Poll was poor as was the title of your Thread.

You need to remember , Ubuntu Forums is the Official front end for Ubuntu. We are one of the main support vehicles for Ubuntu and Canonical. Therefore we are going to get many beginners posting to this Forum. Especially so now that main stream builders ( eg Dell) are shipping with Ubuntu installed.

It is therefore vital that these beginners feel welcome and safe to post here.

A thread and poll constructed the way you had done looks very bad and is contrary to what we are here for.

Beginners are more than welcome here , they are encouraged to visit here. The more the better . As this will grow Linux.

In future if anyone wants to survey subjects like this , it would be better to consult staff members first submit the idea for approval.

Fair enough.
My apologies for the hassle.
