I am bobbo, im 14, i live in Edinburgh, Scotland and use Ubuntu 7.10. Im totally new to the LoCo team but i have been on here for a bit. Also been lurking in the Ubuntu-UK mailing list for about a month.

I'm Paladine (despite my forum nick) and I hang out in the UK irc channel on freenode. You may have seen my blog on planet but I am not on the mailing list. Started using unix in 1992, started using Linux in 1997, been using Ubuntu for about 18 months and currently I run Gutsy Gibbons.

I also run Linux on my iPAQ which is set up as a webserver (see sig) and I am currently running a letter campaign against the BBC's decision to restrict their iPlayer service to Microsoft Windows XP.

I am 33, have a 20 month old son and a partner called Heather, about to enter the 3rd year of my Information Systems and Applied Sociology degree with the plan of hopefully starting a PhD towards the end of next year.

Have worked in IT all my adult life and started out programming when I was 17, moved into systems testing the benefit system in 1992 for the DHSS. I have worked in ISPs as well as teaching, support and consulting. Nowadays my efforts are more political in nature and for my PhD I am hoping to research the relationship between technology and society.

I help try to find/make content for http://linux.co.uk (Not easy. Any tips/helpers?), as well as doing a little bit of bug triage in launchpad when I get round to it. (I think someone needs to go through the "confirmed but not status'ed" bugs a bit more... although the new statuses have confused me a bit, haven't done much since they came in. Been using Ubuntu for a about a month now, planning on using it as a base for my music sever in my house in the UK.
Currently have 2 computers, one using Fiesty fawn and one with Gibbon T4

AMD 3600+ 3 gig memory and loads of IDE drives. (waiting for me to put a 4200x2 chip in)

Compaq Presario with Pentum 4 3ghz chip 1gig ram (Running XP Media center and Ubuntu Gibbon T4)

The Compaq is my day to day comp I use here in France mostly for surfing the net and Music playing. I would bin XP totally but at the mo need it for Torrents - nothing comes close to Utorrent and because I really no idea how to use the command line yet...

I am a ex-pat Scot, living on the edge of Brum (Tamworth). Been using linux / unix (Solaris) since about 1990, I support Solaris servers and systems that run embedded linux.

Started with Suse, got feed up with it about version 9, moved to Redhat fedora for awhile, got feed up with it when my employer gave me a new laptop last year and installed Ubuntu.

Now use Ubuntu when ever possible. My wife is feed up with all the computers at home, server runs Fedora core 5, but will be changed to Ubuntu soon, kids desktop and another laptop dual boot XP and Ubuntu.

Only one I cannot get using linux is my wife, unfortunately proprietary accountancy software is a pain to get working on linux.

Hey there, you can actually get uTorrent working under Ubuntu using Wine.

Also, ktorrent is pretty good and native to Ubuntu (well Kubuntu really but you know what I mean..)

Pete 54, CNC machine setter down in, er, looks out of window, rusty Exeter. Originally from the SE.
I've just started using Ubuntu7.1, ordered the disk because it's a little cheaper than buying XP (again, I seem to loose system disks regularly).
But apart from the freeness, :cool: I thought I'd see if Linux would sort out my web connection hijack woes. And of course it did!! :)
I'm hoping that I'll be able to simply 'use' Ubuntu for my surfing, emailing, storing a few pics and tunes, and selling off my bits and bobs on ebay.

I know a bit about cars and bikes, and quite a lot about animals, and if I don't know it, then Google or Wiki will help. ;)

Have to say, after over 30 years of "playing" with pooters, (yes, I had a Sinclair ZX80 with 1Kb RAM), how impressed I am with Gutsy. Had a go at Slackware about 12 - 13 years ago, and even to a die hard "DOSser", it was way over my head.

How times have changed!

Anyway, I hope I can be of help to people on here in some way, even though I have a lot to learn about Linux myself.

Roger, 57, from Huddersfield in Yorkshire. We (my wife and I) have been using Linux only (no Windows) for over five years. Started with SuSe and have since used virtually every other distro. We've been Ubuntu users for about a year and it's unlikely we'll change. Though I do like Debian and Slackware.
I switched to Kubuntu a couple of months ago. I prefer KDE's (almost) endless configurability (is that a real word?).
How Linux has changed in the few years since we started using it! Ubuntu has been at the forefront and the main driving force of that change/improvement.
Whenever I see or have to use Windows I can't believe how old fashioned and clunky it is.
I'll be checking back regularly. Hope I can help and be helped.

Hi Steve here I am noob to linux, well installed and briefly used but to no great success!!

Want to ditch Windows Shista and eventually solely use linux what's given me grief is wireless networking set up!!I have the dreaded Broadcom wireless adapters, I hope this will be my breakthrough distro!!

I use HP Compaq nx 7300 laptop and I am hoping that it'll set up fine the version I'm downloading (ubuntu 7.10). If I'm gonna struggle with the wireless adapter I'm willing to persevere with help to set it up once and for all.I use wpa-psk 2 encyrption to connect if that helps!!

Many thanks to you all if you can help me, I consider myself above average to fairly advanced with windows and hope to achieve this with linux and then help others to switch too.

I thought Synaptic was something to do with the trackpad on my laptop :oops: The first distro I ever used was Xandros 2 from the Linux user and developer cover disk. I found the original Magazine the other day, and now its funny to look back and know who the people writing in it actually are!

I now use ubuntu on all my machines, including the lovely EEE. I am still fairly new to it, but am getting better all the time.

My name is Nathan and I was introduced to Ubuntu by my cousin in Jan or Feb 2007. I ran Ubuntu/Kubuntu for a month and then switched to pure Debian for a few months. I basically set it up near identical to Ubuntu, but eventually decided that Ubuntu had those extra benifits for a desktop user. I appreciate the fact that the Ubuntu devs set this thing up how I want it to be, so that's why I'm sticking with Ubuntu. I can't see it going downhill, both Debian and Ubuntu will remain strong in my opinion.

I have played with Ubuntu since Feisty Fawn.I believe Linux will take over Desktop within next 10-15 years and it will only take that long because peeps are so addicted to M$. Tried Ubuntu a few years back and rather enjoyed it, though couldn't stay with it full-time due to some mandatory Windows-only stuff for my course - and now I'm back in the fold, after a couple of years away, building a new desktop. A lot's changed since I last built one, so I have a lot of learning to do.

It was a big move, and now that I'm settled I can start working on projects again. I'm looking to get a cheap-ish machine to run it on as a hobby. I primarily have used Windows PCs (at work) and my Macbook Pro at home. I'm a huge geek and love to learn new things! I intro'd myself elsewhere but its not complete. On here i'm terabyte1 but my real name is Hugo. I live in Ashington, Northummberland and have a married Daughter who lives in Alloa, clackmannanshire (say that when your drunk) and an eighteen year old son at home. Been with Ubuntu since 6.06 and have used Fedora, SUSE from 6.1, Unix when it was put out by California's Berkeley University and seized on by my then firm Siemens (when I was working on a Gemini (NASA) contract making various relays and switch-gear and testing them with Unix fragments. Um! I think that's enough stuff for you lot to get your teeth into - i guess I'm old but my mind hasn't aged yet - honest!:P See yer around - oh and I cycle a lot on a bike :)

Hi my name's Paul and I've recently installed Kubuntu onto my new salvage build. I've always liked Linux, and had a Debian installation for years, but only now that I've installed Kubuntu I have a Linux installation that is almost fully functional in every aspect.

(I've never managed to get Linux completely working on my computers. Mostly due to laziness on my part)

I haven't taken the plunge and installed 9.10 yet. But looking for contributing (in some way) to Ubuntu's growth.

My name is Mark, I'm 71 years old and from Stratford-on-Avon. Recently the logic board on my G5 PowerMAC died and it was cheaper to buy an MiniMAC than to repair the G5, so that was what I did. The MiniMAC is Intel based (whatever that means) and I am having a few problems.

1) Because I was unable to discover how to control the weird box that surrounds random portions of messages when I am editing replies to emails, I abandoned Mail and am now using Thunderbird. HOWEVER, I'm stuck when it comes to importing Address Book to Thunderbird. I get so far, and then the necessary files are greyed out. Please can someone tell me how to overcome this prob.

2) As I am a photographer I need to be able to control my printer (an Epson Photo 1290). Epson have been of some help, but I still am unable to adjust colour balance or quality. Can anyone offer helpful (and polite) suggestions, please?

Hello forum! :) I'm 38, living in Birmingham UK. I was introduced to Linux, and Ubuntu as it happens, through the anarchist community in the UK where GNU/Linux seems to have achieved maximum penetration. Any social centre or anarchst house seem to be using it, I suppose for very obvious political and practical reasons.

I also have some impressive geek credentials having watched Dr Who fairly religiously since the age of three and participated in fandom since 1984. I was picked out at school as 'gifted at science' and thus got a chance to do my first programming (in BASIC) at the age of 12. Since then however I went more down a Humanities route academically so you should treat me as a newbie for all practical purposes! Having used MS ******* for a while I am pleased to have finally switched over to GNU/Linux for home use after XP died.

Enjoying using the latest Ubuntu so far, it's a culture shock to get back into using a Shell but i'm having fun and keen to learn.

I'm terabyte1 I've been on here a while and got a bit bogged down with loading the Xen Hypervisor on one of my machines. Anyway, I live in Northumberland, England (which is just below Edinburgh, Scotland) and live in a place called Ashington where Steve Harmison the Cricketer lives and Bobby and Jack Charlton (footballers) used to live. Oh, I'm um old like 68! - probably get the cold shoulder now...:lolflag: I've helped a couple of people in the Absolutely New area but not much else.

I've been using Ubuntu since I got 6.06 LTS with my Official Ubuntu Book by Benjamin Mako Hill, Jono Bacon, Corey Burger Jonathan Jesse and Ivan Krstic! Good book too!

I've been using Linux since 1998 and it's been my primary OS since about 2003 when I went virtually Windows free (apart from a small XP install on a VM to talk to my stupid printer ask why it's blinking it's red light of death at me). I started with Ubuntu with 5.10 but previously I used Gentoo, Suse, Debian and an LFS install which taught me more than I wanted to know! I started learning Python nearly a year ago now and try to learn more whenever time allows. I also have an interest in XMPP technology aka Jabber.

Just thought I'd say hi. I'm Paul, 33 from Warrington in Cheshire. Been in the IT world since I was 17 and currently work for a registered childrens charity in 3rd Line Server/Firewall support.

Always been a Windows user so only really touched on Linux about a year ago when I decided to try out various flavours, Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Ubuntu Studio/Linuxmint/Mandriva/OpenSuSe and found it very good but went back to Windows for the familiarity.

Recently my fairly new Windows 7 machine failed on me (the OS not the hardware) and despite having a Ghost image I decided to give Ubuntu 10.10 a go and see how I got on.

Its definately a learning curve, especially being so comfy in my "Windows Slippers" but I have to say it certainly is more to my liking from a geek perspective.

I am running Windows XP in a VM for a couple of things I need (Watchguard VPN into work etc) but hopefully I'm now Linux all the way, at home at least.

Hoping to show my face on here and get to know people.

I've just realised that I've been bumbling along, asking questions, getting good help, but I haven't had the sense to introduce myself.

Now retired from making fans, I've turned to building a cnc machine(hopefully to build hammered dulcimers) which has finished up being run in Hardy Heron/EMC2 on its own system.

Realising that it was inevitable, I'm now in the process of migrating completely over to Ubuntu(Meerkat) from xp, and what an exiting process that is.:confused:

My name is Peter Maddison, I am fairly new to Ubuntu, I first started with Ubuntu 11.10 when a Schoolfirend, who'd moved to USA got me interested in Ubuntu after I was explaining how much I hated the new Windows 7 (I was an XP user). I tried it first on the DVD and was instantly hooked.
I have since removed Window$ from my system and it is now a single boot system with Ubuntu 12.04LTS.
I am so happy with it my new OS, I would like to give something back so I am giving some of my time to promote Ubuntu so, after finding out that System76 are giving away FREE stickers, I decided I would be their UK outlet. So... please contact me to find out hot to get your free stickers.
