Rescubuntu is an Ubuntu remix.

It is a live cd that provides the data recovery expert with an
environment equipped with the best free-libre, open source data
recovery and forensics tools available. Since many of those libraries
and tools are part of the Ubuntu Installer, it makes sense to remix
Ubuntu into a lightweight and powerful environment for data recovery.

Should it primarily USB-key based? Nowaday, usb keys are more practical than CDs. Being both (CD and USB based like grml) would be great.

grml is what I'm using as my rescue tool right now. Of course, a ubuntu-based rescue tool would be better for me (same kernel, same versions of various software.)

CD will almost always work. USB is spotty with different computers.

Should it primarily USB-key based? Nowaday, usb keys are more practical than CDsCDs are like three times more practical than USB keys... mostly because there is a handful of computers that hate to boot on USB, and the others even require you the bios password for that...

I think a hybrid approach would work..

I agree that CDs are more versatile.

I still wrote a page on how to make rescubuntu boot from USB. It should work, but I have not tested it. Please try it:

It's kinda a wiki page, so you can edit pages in that section of the rescubuntu web site. If the procedure needs editing, go ahead. I encourage anyone to jump in.

Maybe I'll try to find a way to make the next version fit on a 128 meg USB stick....
