View Full Version : Foreign language answering machine message

I thought it would be funny to have a multilingual message on my answering machine (even thought I wouldn't even understand them all). I know French and English, but I'd like to have a few more like Spanish, German or Italian (they are "readable" by someone who doesn't speak those languages). If you know a foreign language, can you tell me which language and translate "You have reached Guillaume, leave me a message".
Thanks :)

My Spanish is a bit shaky, but I think this is it:
Usted ha alcanzada Guillaume. Por favor registre un mensaje.
(Pronounced "oo-STED ah al-can-ZA-da Guillaume. Pour fa-VOUR ray-GEE-stray (hard "g") oon men-SAH-hay"

German- Sie haben Guillaume erreicht. Lass mir eine Message.
Not quite, first on the one hand you use the formal 'you' and then you switch to casual, second 'lass' is a bad choice and 'Message' in German is terrible.
It should be, either formal:
Sie haben Guillaume erreicht. Hinterlassen Sie mir eine Nachricht.
Or casual:
Du hast Guillaume erreicht. Hinterlasse mir eine Nachricht.
Cheers :)

U heeft Guillaume bereikt, laat een bericht voor mij achter.
(it's dutch by the way) This is also a bit formal, you could substitute the "U" for "Je"
And now semi phonetically (at least, readable by an english speaker.. i hope ; )
djuh haebt Guillaume bereickt (as in EInstein) , laet een (as in kEEN) bericht vor meh aeghter.

Well in Greek its "'Εχετε πάρει τον Guillaume, παρακαλώ αφήστε το μήνυμα σας."
And written in latin characters so that you can read it:
"Ehete pari ton Guillaume, parakalo afiste to minima sas".
Although if you don't know where to pronounce the punctuations used in Greek it will sound pretty stupid! :)

in tagalog or pilipino or filipino (whatever... i don't know the exact name of my language):
ito si Guillaume, pakiiwan ng mensahe
(which really means: "this is guillaume, please leave a message" it sounds more natural than:)
naabutan mo si Guillaume, pakiiwan ng mensahe
naabutan = reached

Usted ha alcanzada Guillaume. Por favor registre un mensaje.
Actually, it would be more like "Ha llamado usted a Guillaume. Por favor, deje su mensaje".
I'll leave it to Arisna to do the phonemical translation, though, I'd probably just mess that part up.
