um, did am i the only one who didn't' know that xubuntu left xfce and took up gnome? why did the xubuntu team decide to do this? now xubuntu pretty much looks like a watered-down version of ubuntu, which i'm not all too happy about since it took me 4 hours to download.... i was really hoping to try out the xfce desktop environment...

If you want an OS with the best XFCE environment I highly suggest you try Wolvix (http://wolvix.org/).

post a screenshot.

As I recall, Xubuntu's default XFCE settings are very much like Ubuntu's default GNOME settings.

Except that it is uglier :p I never figured out why both panels have to be so huge by default. It looks really ugly, and takes up a lot of valuable screen space.

What are you on about? Xubuntu uses the same GTK libs as Gnome but that's where the similarity ends. Do explain what you mean.

Xubuntu is still XFCE; it's just been tweaked to look as similar to stock Ubuntu as possible.

That'd be like saying "Kubuntu looks a bit like Windows. I thought it was supposed to be a Linux distro!"

They're both XFCE, Xubuntu's just set up to look like Gnome by default. They look similar because they both use GTK libs.

oh.

well, that's what i was afraid of. i mean, kubuntu looks drastically different from ubuntu and i was expecting another drastic change from the two when i booted xubuntu. just a little surprised to discover something that looked almost like ubuntu.

It wouldn't take long to make it look drastically different ;)

How can you confuse Xfce with Gnome?
People please, lay-off the grass, it's really bad for you!

the kubuntu team has vacillated between keeping their distinctive look--closer to stock KDE--and trying to bring their version of KDE closer to the usual stock Ubuntu setup.

Personally, I'm much happier with the Xubuntu setup as it is; particularly for users who have to hop from Ubuntu to Xubuntu

If I were you, I'd not fret about it looking the same. The main difference is in the way that they function, etc.

Making the different Desktop Environments to look vastly different is not difficult...

what does it matter though, you can change it the way you want it after install.

you wouldn't know what i am using by looking at my desktop

I think the top panel and the workspace switcher on the bottom panel confused him, plus the gray color of the panel is close to the same as gnome.

But once you actually click on the menu, or click on your Settings Manager you will see the difference.

And xfce4 is very easy to customize, this is my recent brown version of it:

There's no standard look for any one DE. Because They're so customizable, you can make them look however you want. I could make Gnome look like KDE, KDE look like Gnome, XFCE look like KDE, etc. etc.

Or Vector.

I've heard that Arch Linux with xfce4.4.2 is one of the fastest Operating Systems out there.

Indeed. I've never liked the 2 panel setup at all. And with a lot of people switching to widescreen monitors, it makes even less sense than before.

Anyway, since people are posting screenshots, here's mine:

It is just the default look, don't make an opera out of it.

I actually think the default look is much better than the other screenshots posted here.,..

I feel that the default Xfce4 desktop looks good, except for the huge gray panels...

...but comments like, "It's not GNOME but it's so very ugly"...seem funny to me because any gtk-2.0 theme engine in GNOME will work with Xfce4...and the gtk-2.0 is what makes the OS look as it does...and default GNOME and Xfce look very similar on most distros...

This is Debian using GNOME: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=783&slide=5

This is Linux Mint using Xfce4.4: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=846&slide=3

benx009:

Right click on the panel and try editing them. The biggest differences between GNOME and XFCE are memory usage, flexibility, and features. XFCE lacks a lot of feautures from GNOME (no scrollwheel task switching makes me cry.) but it's very flexible and has graphical configuration for most everything.

The Xubuntu developers used this flexibility to make it closer to standard Ubuntu. You can change it however you like though. Check out the Wolvix LiveCD for an excellent XFCE setup.

xubuntu is so much faster then ubuntu. i just can't switch back to the gnome even though it has a couple features i like. speed is more important for me.
