How many packages do you have installed on your ubuntu computer? (You can see the number in the lower left corner of Synaptic.)
And what type of a user are you: do you feel uncomfortable when you have a unused packages installed? Or do you like to have tons of packages installed?

1234 :P
i don't really care about unused packages most of the time. if the root partition is running out of space i will go look through them and delete them though. thats only happened once though, when i had a ridiculously small root partition. now you could argue that it is ridiculously big(15GiB)

1360, but only because it's a good idea to preserve metapackages in Gutsy.
Only 362 in Debian Sid

I have 1364 installed in Feisty and 1184 installed in Gutsy.
I do not install anything unless it is part of the base system or something else I need like all the audio/video stuff and utilities.

I have 983 packages installed (server install + added all the things I actually use). My pervious install had about 1400 packages.
I like to keep it low, though. Not that it really makes a difference, but I don't like having this around that I don't use anyway.

How did you do that? Is this some ultra-minimal install?

I install stuff and if I decide I won't use it I go and uninstall it.
I have no idea why. My 8GB root partition isn't even close to half full.

Hm, it seems I win (or lose)... 1702.
I enjoy playing around and installing stuff. I generally only delete something if it's broken, or if I really don't like using it.

I created a filter in Synaptic for that: Create a new filter, select only Installed, Upgradeable, and Residual config, and add a search parameter for "Includes -dev".
I now have 951 packages installed.
