It uses a piece of software called vbulletin. This is a closed source proprietary piece of forum software that you would have to pay for.

And, before anyone moans about this please read this. (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=176622)
The front end theme to these forums has been extensively hacked by ubuntugeek who runs them.

Which is a slow, expensive resource hog. Invision Power Board is much better value, but the best free one would have to be MyBB, the current version is 1.2.9, but 1.4 is coming out soon, and that promises to be awesome. The URL is http://www.mybboard.net.

There is a Ubuntu-like theme that you can get for it, http://community.mybboard.net/showthread.php?tid=19420

I disagree, NextBBS is way better.

I've always used SMF for my forums.

I've heard that phpBB gets hacked quite easily, so I would avoid it.

Hmm, it's not bad, but it has a stupid install method, and is limited in a couple of ways (such as flexibility of groups). I like the layout, nice and easy on the eyes, and a few more features would make it a pretty good BB package.

I would agree with this. SMF is a very good piece of software.

I have used http://www.phpbb.com/ for a project at work, it is free, very user friendly and runs on linux in minutes.

vbulletin has tons of options and seems to be very secure. of course it's not free.

smf is my choice for free ones and i am starting to like fireboard mod that works with joomla.

SMF is an amazing piece of software for forums. The only bad thing is lack of good themes. However, new themes get cranked out quite often.

SMF is my choice for a free bulletin....

You can see it in action at The CafeLinux.org Forum

http://CafeLinux.org/forum/

If you want to see different themes in action you can join and through the userCP via your profile I have enabled 12 themes that work great and are probably the best themes that SMF has....

After registration go to the profile>Look and Layout Preferences>current theme is set to Current Theme: SMF Default Theme - Core>click (change) next to this to try out all themes...

I have found it is best to stick with the SMF default theme so all mods work without event, but I give the freedom of my forum users to change to the 12 themes listed, the ones that don't break the board but you will see a loss in mods between themes...

My favorite theme is "Simplicity" because it is so un-forum like...

keep in mind that SMF is NOT nearly as good as vBulletin that ubuntuforums, and Fedora forums uses, but it is free and open source.

Thanks for your replies, it wasn't my intention to start a flame war about fora packages...

I want to built a forum, mostly for educational purposes, and since i like the look and feel of ubuntuforums so i thought i might ask!

from what i've understood up until now: Ubuntuforums uses vBulletin which is good but expensive {and not free as in speech}... a free alternative is SMF or phpbb.

I checked simplicity theme {RAV TUX proposed} and although its not so forum-like, ubuntuforums is far more beautifull....

Can i find a theme {preferably in the free packages} that resembles the feel of this forum....{i don't mean an exact replica, but i don't like the classic forum look..}?

I never meant for you to use the SMF simplicity theme as a substitute for the ubuntuforums vBulletin theme, I merely just said it was my personal favorite.

Did you try out all the different themes installed on The CafeLinux Forum?

Also go to the SMF website to see all the themes available,,,

Unless you buy vBulletin I know of no community board that is this nice.

Can't think of any mainstream forum software that doesn't.

vBulleting is much better than SMF, seriously, SMF got in advantage it is open source though. I was able to use vBulletin for free multiple times so even if it is better I wouldn't really have used it if I had to pay it...
