View Full Version : Semi-Anonymous Browsing from Windows using a Flash Drive

A while ago, I remember seeing something about being able to run Linux from a flash drive while still inside of windows. The intent was to provide a method for a user to surf the web from an internet-capable computer, like those in libraries and coffee shop kiosks.

The idea was to provide a relatively secure way to check your email and whatnot without leaving anything behind (cookies, browser history, etc.).

For the life of me, I can't find it anymore.

I know you can boot linux off of a flash drive (like Live CDs), but this is NOT what I'm trying to accomplish. Essentially, it would run like a Virtual Machine within Windows.

Perhaps I just misread something, and am remembering it wrong...I've been known to do that on a regular basis.

Thanks in advance!

I think you're looking for PortableApps (http://portableapps.com/), or you can run Damn Small Linux in a Qemu in Windows.

dsl can do what you want to do.

Last, but not least, is a version of DSL called "DSL Embedded". This is actually not a livecd but a *.zip file that contains the DSL system and a "Virtual PC" style emulator program called QEMU. The QEMU program can be run from Microsoft Windows or from Linux and it creates a tiny virtual PC inside a software window. It then boots the DSL operating system from inside this virtual computer window. In this way, it is possible to run DSL from within MSWindows.
