ant properties files in eclipse

I can open ant xml files in eclipse using the built in ant edito, this editor allows me to hover over a variable with the mouse and it will display the contents extremly useful for debugging ant scripts where path names are held in variables. However when opening .properties files i don not have this functionality as eclipse will not give me the option of editing the file with the ant editor. Does anybody know anyway of getting around this.
