Microsoft is a business, answerable to "the bottom line". Many of us here who use and/or contribute to open source are answerable to passion for what we do.

Ever noticed that it can be easy spend days trying to save a few seconds of run time, trim off a few bytes of code, or otherwise make an already good programme better?
