My August desktop:

I remade an old sepia tone theme of mine, and remade the UbunutuStudio icons to match the sepia tones...plus I themed Swiftweasel and Thunderbird to match.

i compiled svn240 but my border show at the bottom. what i mean is the angle stops about 3-5 pixels above the bottom of the screen and straightens out. yours doesn't appear to do that..

This is the setup I always return to. Simple home-made wallpaper, openbox oPerfection theme, home-made Clearlooks-Calla gtk theme (a combination of Clearlooks and Calla), etiquette icons. I'm not too happy about the fonts, though. I normally use URW Gothic L, but wanted a change. I haven't found a good alternative yet, but am using HeldustryFT Black. (If you know of any good clean fonts, please let me know!).

The applications in screenshot 2 are Thunar, GMPC, docker and bbtime.

Nothing terribly fancy, but it works for me.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/6514/screenshot1mh2.th.png (http://img207.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot1mh2.png)

See docker? It has one "square" too many, that keeps disappearing and re-appearing -can't it be quiet? *I also need to find out how to move it and change it's color*

Visibility or TTM - I can't get neither to work (visibility's site is down and TTM gives me some error about Pango [it is installed] )

I changed the GTK to GAIA and the fonts to *the ones dbbolton talked about*
Any ideas for Icons?

I'm not sure why the empty square is there. Does it appear when you start a particular app? To move docker, use obconf (on the Dock tab); since docker is a dockapp, it will move to wherever you place your dock. To change its colours, select a different theme. All dockapp background colours are controlled by your theme. If you just want to change the colour of your dock, but do not want to change theme, you can change the dock colour by changing the 'OSD' settings in the themerc file of your theme (normally ~/.themes/THEMENAME/openbox2/themerc). Note that this will also change your 'on screen display' colours (alt-tab, change desktops).

Any ideas for Icons?

I would go for a icon theme with a darker touch, that matches the colours of your wallpaper and openbox/gtk theme. Some darker icon themes I have used in the past: whatever2, GnomeCorsair, Human Ultra Black/Gray, etc. Have a look at gnome-look.org

how did you remove the window border from your termnial?

with compiz-config manager, select windows decoration plugin and put somethiing like this in the line 'decoration windows':

(any & !(name=gnome-terminal | name=gkrellm)
that means every windows are decorated but gnome-terminal and gkrellm.
you need also regex matching compiz fusion plugin to be enabled.

Would you mind posting said diagonal textures? I really like them.

Sure I don't mind, anyone is welcome to use and edit them if they would like.

This is the texture I used for the background for Awn
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/5484/untitled1iq5.png

And this is the background I used for the top panel. I was trying to do something with the bottom, but you can't see it anyway.

Do you think I should?

Try this, copy this code and save it as .fonts.conf in your ~/ folder.

<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<match target="font">
<edit name="autohint" mode="assign">

You might want to enable your "anti-aliasing" for fonts, as well as your "hinting" and "sub-pixel hinting".

Check out your notepad where you wrote your untitled text file. It should give smooth fonts to your mousepad/notepad app.

As for your monitor, I'm not sure.

Yeah, it makes a big difference with the mousepad...and for me, the "Use anti-aliasing for fonts" and "Use hinting" really help my browser fonts...like the menubar fonts for File, Edit, View,....

Icons are AER-OS-XK, GTK theme is OSX-theme mod, fonts are Microsoft's, without antialiasing. Now I notice that it says "Firefox Web Browser", so I'm changing it to "Web browser". Messaging client is Pidgin, Function calculator is Kayali, Calculator is Qalculate. Apps available in the repository, themes available in Gnome-look.org, and irrespectively gusty is still broken.

- Wallpaper is called 'Slot Canyon'.I probably found it on interfacelift (http://interfacelift.com)
- Conkyrc is attached. Nothing spectacular there.
- Icon theme is Gant 0.3. I got it from either Deviantart or KDE-look.
- Color scheme is called Paper - Coffee and I think that I got it from kde-look (http://kde-look.org/). Long time ago though.
- Window decoration is good ol' Polyester.
- The menu thingy is called Tasty Menu. it is still a very early version and it has a number of peculiarities.
- FreeSans font.

I'm a creature of habit, so I'm still with MurrinaGraphiteGentle GTK, Murrine Metacity and Tango icons (all available on gnome-look). The wallpaper is a Gibson ES-335 Dot from DeviantArt somewhere, all running smoothly on Gutsy, using Compiz-Fusion as a composite manager.

That's great.

- The dock functionality that tops every task manager
- The reflections that everybody loves
- But not the compoziting requirement that makes things so hard
- And no bouncing icons!

only issues is that it is kind of limited in some stuff and it could really use tooltips...
Edit: ouch it is not visible for all workspaces , I guess we have to wait till it gets better, plenty of potential actually.

ThanX a lot it worked like charm
except two probs ; that is when i pressed the icon again its not minimizing
AND it would be great if if it shows the application name when i moved the cursor on to the icon (tooltips)

@vexorian
I fixed the problem with the work spaces by using devilspie
just add a file by the name simdock.ds in ~/.devilspie (create if not there)

the content of the file should be as follows

(if (is (application_name) "simdock") (begin skip_tasklist skip_pager pin below))

-------------------------------------------------------------------
add
devilspie -a

A bit off topic, but how do you get those diagonal lines on your wallpaper? Can you do that with the Gimp? I've been trying to do so for a while now, but never figured out how.

I have no idea how to do it in GIMP I use photoshop 7 under crossover office and it works well.

In photoshop 7 you make a new file, say 10by10 pixels then you draw a line from 1 corner to another. Then set it as a pattern and fill the picture u want the pattern.

I had a quick go for you, it is not perfect but i tried

Mainly just in gimp, using the clone tool but the top part was a bit harder so i tried copying part of it next which dident work too well as you see

May redo it in photoshop since i am more comfortable with that and should be able to do it better

Off topic - does anyone know how to get conky to load the fonts correctly? If i run it in my startup script, the fonts come up tiny (as in the shot), but if i kill it and rerun once loaded, they turn up fine...

I had that prolem before and I think the problem is you have to use a dimension that is not a power of 2. In other words, try 129x129. I think that's what fixed it.

you may notice that my screenshots switched from openbox to grnome recently. i primarily use openbox on my laptop, since it's somewhat sluggish and overheats easily. it's being repaired right now. my desktop is a bit faster, and has a better graphics card, so i use gnome with compiz on it.

yeah, the screenlets server is down a lot. if you just keep trying to install from their repo, eventually it should work.

i dunno, i think main app is written in python so you need to use python to write screenlets, i don't think there is bindings to write screenlets with another language.
btw, python is a really cool and powerfull OO language, give it a try, here's a link to start:

Standard Ubuntu look...I did change it slightly...

Metacity: Human-squared
Gtk2: Murrina Human Classic (slighty modified with Murrine configurator)
Icons: Human

The above information is not as important as the applications I'm running:

The sphere is drawn with an EXCELLENT mathematics program called Mathematica. It can do pretty much everything. [not opensource]

While not running, my movie player is also amazing. SMplayer. So far it can play every video type I have thrown at it perfectly. [opensource]

Audacity [beta version] recording software that is very intuitive. Much easier than Ardour which is very confusing. Also, the beta version has Gtk2 support so you don't have to work in the old gtk1 interface. Havn't encountered any errors in the development version either. had to compile it myself.

The cow that displays my message is drawn by a cute little simple program called "cowsay." It's in the repository.

I'm disappointed in the fixation on GUI as opposed to the programs one uses which, in the end is what is truly important. Not enough of either is bad!

EDIT::
the theme in Mathematica is not the theme in the rest of the computer. It uses the QT engine so it had to look that way. Nevertheless...the output of Mathematica is stunning!

Hey great to know mathematica is not made by inept developers who can't do cross platform software. It is a very great program and I remember some guy complaining about lack of math tools for students in Linux, I guess this is enough to shut him up...
