nah.

But who knows? They might begin to sell some PCs with ubuntu.

My first comp was acer and it lasted pretty well so if that happens I might consider them...

Acer India has been offering Linux preloaded computers for ages. I see them all the time in the newspaper. Too bad most of them don't have enough memory.

But a spokesperson for Acer told ZDNet.co.uk on Tuesday that the company — one of the world's top laptop manufacturers — had "no plans" to sell any Linux-based systems in the UK. "[Acer models] with Ubuntu pre-loaded are available at the factory level. However, there is no demand for it in the UK. Therefore, those configurations are not an option [for UK customers] at the moment," said the spokesperson.

"If the demand was there, then Acer would sell it," the spokesperson said, adding that such a demand would have to be reported to Acer by its UK resellers.

I have an Acer laptop that runs Feisty very well, it's a Travelmate 4200 WLMi, all intel chipsets. Everything Just Works.

It cam with vista home basic, but I simply backed up the factory image, then erased the HDD save the 6GB recovery partition.

I have exactly the same model, and it has been nothing but trouble for me from day one. Getting wireless to work was a nightmare, getting compositing to work (without freezing) was a nightmare, etc. etc.

This is grand. But if more and more OEMs shun Windows eventually Linux is gonna be the new Winblows (unless AppArmor+FireStarter+KlamAV/ClamAV can deal with viruses/spyware/Trojans and so on effectively).

It's not good news for the UK http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41349
I have an Acer laptop and if they had ubuntu on some as a choice i would have bought one. They say there is no demand but they have not tried, the only reason people choose windows is because that is the only choice they get ( apart from downloading an Ubuntu CD ).

While Memory World's offer has attracted attention outside Singapore for the use of Ubuntu on a notebook, Acer did not ship these notebooks with the Linux distribution preinstalled, said Ignatius Beh, a Memory World sales executive.

"We actually installed it ourselves," Beh said. Acer shipped the notebooks to Memory World with another version of Linux installed, he said.

At the time of writing, Acer did not respond to a request for comment.
