I'm looking around for a decent, cheap laptop for general use. UK ones please. Also without an OS or some kind of Linux preloaded (I will probably wipe it for Arch).

EDIT: I am preferably looking for a 64bit laptop (AMD64/Intel Core 2 Duo proc.) and 512MB RAM or 1GB.

I'm looking for something like this, without the "vista tax".

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aspire-AS3694-Acer-CrystalBrite-Super-Multi/dp/B00079W7TG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-4385847-5315049?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1185824984&sr=8-1

Not looking for anything special. Just NOT an ATI graphics card. I have enough trouble with this one.

Ok...I'm reviving my own thread, but I'm still looking for a decent cheap laptop for the UK. Also what brand do you recommend?

Well, not too far away from the UK you have Holland, and there we have www.bto-notebooks.com. I have one of those, and it's perfect. They also have budget models, but I don't know how budget you want it to be. Have you also heard of Zepto? Bto offers the option to let the notebook be delivered OS-free. I paid the price at once, and they didn't charge me delivery costs! But that was in the Netherlands.

Hope it will help you,

Roald Z

Wow! Those Zepto ones are really good! Really good for the money :)

Any other recommendations? I am going to do a comparison and choose the best one when I get a few.

EDIT: @Raolds - The link you gave doesn't work. I would like to have a look...by the way, the last time I looked at Zepto the prices were not as low.

Try Stapes I bought a Amilo AMD Dual core 1.5 ghz, 2 gig ram, 160 gig hard disc. DVD writer, Intel x3100 graphics card 499. I bought it a couple of weeks ago in my local Staples store, they still have the offer I saw it again this week. You need to go into your local Staples store. They have some good deals I bought a 500 gig external hard drive for 69.99 too.

This is their in store offers.

Helen

Seems cheaper than the Zepto web site?

I'd rather not use staples because they have windows preinstalled. Anyway Zepto is cheaper and better for the money.

Not as cheap as Zepto...it would be nice to have Ubuntu preinstalled, but I would prefer no OS.

Any more recommendations? I'm hoping for a 64bit laptop (I'm really liking it here :) ) and 1024MB ram. But I could settle for 512MB and upgrade it later.

I still can't find a better one than Zepto. Could you also tell me which type of laptop is best (Acer, HP etc.)? I hear that Packard Bell aren't very good. Is that true?

EDIT: I have a Packard Bell desktop and it is really bad. The mouse plays up and the USB ports fail to work.
