The iPhone is only the iPhone because of its software (besides the hype, of course). The iPhone runing Linux would, therefore, not be the iPhone but something like the Phonix.

Maybe you're looking for something like http://openmoko.com/.
I know it isn't an iPhone but the hardware is "kind" of similar.

They are only selling the developer version right now, wait for the end user version if you're going to buy one.
For a wiki and project pages go to http://openmoko.org.

That would be cool, but it would take a while to develop usable drivers and unlock the iphone. Not the iphone anymore it would be called the "Uphone".

That OpenMoko GUI looks cool. I'd love to see the iPhone with Linux. The Phonix is a good name Popch I think we should go with that! Sounds like the word phonetic with Unix and Phoenix (the mythical bird) so yes that's a good name. OK Now we've got the name sorted, anyone know how to program a phone.....? :)

I thereby put the name under the license appropriate for open source, whichever that is.

Given Apple's history of security skills, cracking the software shouldn't be too hard. There's probably an exploit, a buffer over-run exploit, in every program in their OS :P

But I'm still waiting for linux on the PSP. But I will only use that if I can install it with devhook (firmware emulator, sorta) and NOT overwrite my current firmware.

why?
Exactly. What would Linux give the iPhone that it doesn't have with BSD?

All of the stuff that makes the iPhone cool isn't in the kernel, it's in in the Mac equivalent of X.org. And that's a long ways ahead of our X... we're just now getting hotplug features in the coming release that have been solid on Macs for half a decade.

I heard it should be easy to port linux to iphone - there is Rockbox which is a port of Linux on iPod, ubuntu/debian supports (-ed) PPC...

And yes I would like an Ubuntu/Linux mobile.
And yes OpenMoko is nice, but Linux on iphone would be just better (at least for marketing!) with all the iPhone hype.

The iPhone is ARM, not PPC.

Linux is just a kernel.

If you were going to put Linux on an iPhone, you'd do it with the OpenMoko stuff. OpenMoko is a linux kernel plus the tools needed to make a phone work (including phone software, handset DE, etc). The "desktop environment" that you run on your PC simply isn't going to work for a phone. It's not like you can just install Ubuntu.

I'm not sure why you'd get a iPhone just to run OpenMoko... you could run OpenMoko on hardware that's A LOT cheaper, plus you wouldn't be tied into an AT&T contract.

Yeah, but Steve Jobs personally sprays every iPhone with his jizz just for the fanboys.

They love that.

It has already been asked of them to add multitouch. While their hardware would support it, they said they wanted to get all the other features implemented before they work on that.

That said, multitouch is only useful if you design your whole UI around it. It would be quite pointless to add it to a conventional interface (Gnome, et al).
