View Full Version : Upcoming U-BBQ (Ubuntu BBQ)

The following is the email thread that we had going around about the BBQ. I figured since not everyone is subscribed to the mailing list (which you can subscribe to at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-us-co) it would be a good idea to mention it on the forums. I hope that nobody minds that I posted this here, not trying to steal Jim's idea or anything, and I did cut out last names and email address for those who are paranoid and wish to remain anonymous. Feel free to chime in if you're interested in joining the festivities!

Jim

Well, I've been trying to get a nice little coloco BBQ going all summer and now that's it's more than half gone we need to make this happen. I'm dubbing it the first annual coloco ubu-q. I need suggestions on a place and time. I kind of like Boulder 'cause Boulder is cool and somewhat central. I'd offer my local park here in FC but it's a bit of a drive for a lot of people. It needs to be soon though. August 11 would be perfect. Earlier is okay but later is not great for me.

Any takers?

Phillip

Hopefully on a weekend, we all work

Neal
Thanks - sounds great.

Saturday the 11th sounds best to me, as does Boulder.
I don't know offhand about a good specific location.

Jim

Neal, what about the park on 30th street around Arapahoe or something, can't remember. I think there is also a park on or about north broadway that could be nice. I don't remember Boulder so well.

Assuming I can read a calendar, August 11 is a Saturday so all you working stiffs will be able to come.

Please share more ideas if you have them.

Charles

What about the working stiffs that work on Saturday? ;^)

Mitch S

Or the working stiffs like myself who work 7pm to 7.30am Wed, Thur, Fri and every other saturday...... looking at the calender..... that is the week that I work saturday..... and I will need my beauty sleep that day......

Jim

Well, it's impossible to meet everyone's needs. However, I'm open to suggestions. If we have a couple dates we can all vote on what works best. I only offered the 11th because it's close but not too close and last time we tried nothing happened. Much later will edge into the new school year and students and those of us with kids will find it somewhat more difficult.

Mitch S

That it is.... Mine start school the 20th.... when I get off work the morning of the 12th....we will be heading up to our cabin for the week.....As far as dates go... any date that works for the majority...go for it. I am the oddball with the hours. Most dates that work for me don't work for most other people. Unless we could get everyone to have a monday or tuesday off work :)

Daniel

Sounds like a great idea... how about August 12? I have a friend
coming to visit from back east and he will be leaving on the 11th...
so I will be limited as to what I can do on that day.

So we have a forum thread for a BBQ? Actually, you got the name wrong. It the CoLoCo Ubu-Q (although U-BBQ is good too or maybe the UBQ:)).

The 12th is a Sunday. That would work too I guess. Nothing is cemented yet but some traffic on the mailing list is what we need. I don't think many people scan forum treads for social events.

I think UBQ sounds best. :D The only reason why I posted here is that some people, like klobster who just signed up for it, are not subscribed to the mailing list. Hopefully by spreading the news around we might be able to get more people to show.

Well, klobster should sign up for the mailing list. Since this is a support forum, let me legitimize this thread.

/cough cough/

I just ran the ubuntu live cd and clicked the do hickey that installs and i think i chose the option to install just ubuntu and well now windows seems to be gone. it's my dad's computer and he has all his work files store on it. i'm pretty sure he doesn't have things backed up so i really need to get windows back before he comes home. can someone help me? my dad drinks. thanks.

Klobster did just sign up for the mailing list once I suggested that he should.

And why is it nessesary to legitimize this thread, hrmm? I know that I am notorious for being off-topic but the UBQ is support related... people that need Ubuntu support in Colorado should come to the bbq to eat, drink, and be supported. ;)

Btw... I don't think that your dad's drinking problem qualifies as Ubuntu support. :-P

Hey, help is your middle name (w - help - o) so instead of making excuses maybe you could help me with my little problem :)

That being, how do we generate some more interest in our UBQ?

Well I added a poll to this thread to see what days seem best for everyone. As far as generating more interest... that all depends on how many active Coloco members we have. We can try to contact people who have not responded but have joined, by tracking down any contact info that they have submitted to us. So far that's all that I can think of.

Btw... I never noticed the 'help' in Whelpo. I guess I'm now obligated to live up to my own name.

I voted Aug 11 but really either could work. How about a both option on the poll.

I agree that we need not only a "both", but also other combinations.
Can polls be set up with checkboxes rather than radio boxes?
"Vote for as many as you like."

We call that "approval voting" and it is much better than vote-for-one-only.
E.g. that is how Wikipedia elections work.

Both Musashi and Nealmcb made good suggestions... unfortunately there is no way that the poll can be edited as far as I know. If anyone wants to start a new, improved poll... feel free. ;)

For some reason the BBQ does not seem to interest me. It doesent really seem to grab my attention and say "come to the BBQ! It's fun and worthwhile!"

Not saying that it wouldn't be fun. Just saying that it doesent seem overly exciting.

maybe it's just me, but the Free Software Day seems to interest me more for some reason.

I know I sound like a party pooper :), but I'm just trying to tell you what my view is right now.

...of course I might change my mind later.....

You're quickly realizing the problem of hoping to find the best date with people rather than setting one and seeing how many (or few) complaints you get.

I suggest whoever wants to head up this activity (I can't as I probably can't even attend due to RA training) just set a date and place and then see who makes it and plan from there. :)

Well, Aug 11 is ahead in the polls and that was the original date anyway so I say we just plan for Aug 11. We'll do it in Boulder and see if we can find anyone willing to scope out a spot.

The word of the Fonz.

I am not sure where everyone lives but in aurora (or close to it) there are some open parks.
