Distrowatch is better :-#
Thanks for your Opinion. I would both agree and disagree....

Distrowatch is a great website but it is not an Open Content Collaborative Writing Project and not at all good for new distros that must wait up to six months to have articles published; I have heard that a project got bumped up by buying ad space to be taken seriously.

Distropedia will never require a Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris or any Open Source project to have to wait on a waiting list.
Also, Distropedia is not ad dependent or motivated, all Distros are taken seriously without having to buy ad space.

Also Distropedia will never require notability like Wikipedia, and there will be no deletions of Linux or Open Source articles due to lack of notability.

While both Distrowatch and Wikipedia are great websites they are not the be all for Linux, BSD, Open Source or distro information.

Distropedia is filling those gaps, successfully. ;)

Distrowatch is better :-#

I'm just interested in distrowatch for the page hit ranking to know what distros are being looked at. It's different from distropedia because (in my opinion atleast) of it being more just about the technical specs (like what version of a package comes installed) instead of general info

Also Distropedia will never require notability like Wikipedia,

That's really good to hear. I've read about a few little known distros that got their pages deleted from wikipedia just for being unknown, which is pretty pointless (and one of the major things about wikipedia I don't like).

EDIT: Rav, you know how I keep saying that I keep forgetting to get around to adding more info on debian? Well, I just did it. I clicked submit and it said "Iceweasel cannot connect to server", so it was lost :/ It was only a paragraph on stable, testing, and unstable, but I hate it when stuff like that happens.

Your nameservers seem to fail on my end.

Edit: All is well, refreshed cache.

Edit #2: Nice new theme.

Distrowatch is better :-#

I will disagree with that statement. If Distropedia keeps growing consistently...It will be better and have alot more distro's content. Other than that, this project is recent

I can see where you might want an Open Content Collaborative Writing Project with similar information. I don't think a waiting list is a bad idea. At least it helps weeds out some distros. If your distro is no longer active after 6 months, then you shouldn't even bother. I have never heard of Distrowatch giving special treatment to distros that advertise and I don't think it is true. I would love to know what distro got bumped up.

It's not a big secret in fact I knew about the distro getting bumped up from a post here by the Dev.

We have made a huge leap foward today by being included into the DistroWatch (http://www.distrowatch.com) database. This is an honor and will surely help get the word out about our project. I would like to personally thank Ladislav (Distro's Webmaster) for his assistance in this process and for the inclusion of Ubuntu CE into the ever growing database of distributions. Below is the link to our listing page.

Ubuntu CE DistroWatch Page (http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntuce)

God Bless, Jereme

OK lets give this thread another try, "Off Topic" post need not be made, and response to "Off Topic" post need not be made. (use the report post button to alert the mods)

now back to the topic....

Congrats!...are they going to feature Ubuntu CE on the front page of DistroWatch?

Yes, when the next release comes out it will be announced on the front page. I am also running a banner ad on DW as well.

Thanks, Jereme

moving this thread to the Ubuntu Christian Edition,....3rd party forum with a redirect.http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=242986

This fact is no big secret it is simple fact:

I know you talked to the distrowatch developer to get a fast track on distrowatch.

I was wondering if you could help me get Oz Linux published on distrowatch...

I have 3 versions out:

Oz Linux
Oz Rx
Oz Enterprise

I would greatly appreciate any help you bring my way.

Thanks in advance,

Jozef

I have to disagree with you about the wait time, the wait time for a new distro could be a death kneel to a start up project to attract new users and developers.

I believe this goes against everything that Linux and the Open Source Community is based on.

All projects new or old, large or small should have a equal footing at least in acknowledging their mere existence.

You can choose to agree or disagree, but the reality has changed with Distropedia...No distro project will be subject to a wait time, notability or have to buy ad space to be taken seriously.

Distropedia represents the very best of the Linux community and GNU Open Source.

Distrowatch doesn't have all distros.

This is a good point here, DW again can be great fun and is a great website but it is not the defining reality of the linux world. They acknowledge this and there are many other sites that are great reference sites for Linux.

I encourage as many to start up as possible, just as I encourage as many distros that can be built.

That's kinda crappy. Hopefully Ubuntu CE got what they wanted out of it.

I singed up at cafelinux and was going to add some entries but wasn't sure of the format. I notice some have only a short description and a link and others have a table with more information. Is there a standard entry?

Welcome Distropedian.

Thanks for signing up, please see the format used in some other post....

Take a look at my most recent post on Klikit-Linux (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/127), for an even better example check out any post by Aubrey like the Edubuntu (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/125) post.

you want to first create a Distro Static "Page" (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/add/page)
and then create your Distro News "Book Page" (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/add/book)

to clarify the "Book Page" is the intro article on the front page, while the "static page" will have the table and other info, screenshots etc.

Both Aubrey and Myself use the Xinha Here! (http://www.hypercubed.com/projects/firefox/) extension in Firefox...great tool....of course you can code everything yourself if you are more comfortable with that. ;)

Aubrey has offered to help layout pages for anybody so if you want you can ask him for help on that....

but it is pretty easy just follow the format by example....

When posting your "book page" be sure and select "Distropedia, your source for distro information" as your "parent" page.

must importantly have fun with it :)

& Thanks again for signing up, I look forward to your entries...

Congrats on Distorpedia! I think it is a great idea and I will be adding Ubuntu CE soon.

It is true that I was able to expedite the listing of Ubuntu CE by purchasing some advertising from DW. Their rational is that if you are willing to advertise then you must be serious about your project. I don't blame them. There is a new distro popping up everyday and there are even more that seem to disappear overnight. So for me it helped get our project off the ground and it was well worth it and completely within the rights of the DW webmaster.

Like I said I have no problem letting everyone know that we were able to expedite our listing by purchasing advertising. However, I believe some of your post was taken from a Private Message thread between you and I. I do not think it is appropriate to publicly release the content of a PM without at least asking the other party. That is just my 2cents.

If I am wrong about it being from a PM I apologize. :)

Again congrats, Jereme

Jereme, you are right, I forgot to ask your permission first and I sincerely apologize...I will edit it out....If it is ok to post it I will repost it but it is up to you,...I didn't think that the post contained anything different then what you said elsewhere....my apologies

I do not question DW's policy, I understand why they do what they do but Distropedia offers something different that neither DW or Wikipedia offer as can be seen by my post for JUXlala! (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/123) and Klikit-Linux (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/127), also Aubrey's post on Comfusion (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/?q=node/102)....all of which are quite successful distros that would be subjected to a a waiting period by DW and notability by Wikipedia. (In fact this just came to me,....Distropedia can be used to fullfill notability for Wikipedia!)

I also look forward to you adding and keeping up to date your distro information on Ubuntu Christian Edition...I have always rejoiced in your success.

One more thing about the DW waiting period policy; I completely understand their logic. I myself have unlimited space by my hosting provider. This allows me to literally publish as much information about each and every distro that exist and even archive the ones that don't are not active anymore. I wish the best for each and every Linux project if I can help in some way by at least getting the word out then I will. I wish for success for everyone. I do not mind publishing a distro project even if they were to go under in 6 months, I would hope for that this would not happen and I will do everthing in my power to help a distro become known, atleast have their existence acknowledged (hopefully help draw user and developers to their projects). If they do close shop, their article will always exist as an online archival record for anybody to reference in a free and Open Source environment.

I am not anti-Distrowatch or anti-Wikipedia I support and enjoy both websites I just believe there is a need beyond these two websites, I trust that Distropedia (http://cafelinux.org/distropedia/) will fill this gap.

Jereme, Thanks for the congrats and I look forward to having you as a Distropedian.

No problem. I was just a bit thrown by it. You are right, I have been open about it. It was just a matter of principal.

I really like the idea of Distropedia. I am very excited about it and hope that it will grow. I want you to know that what you are doing is great and has the potential to really help Linux distros get the attention that they deserve.

Thanks, Jereme
