These are great and a little bit eerie. Thnak you for posting them. I will not use them for the background of my desktop, though.

Btw, have you got a new Avatar? What is it? b/w and flipped-over versions of the Windows(TM) logo?

It's a visual illusion also.....it only works if you wear eyeglasses....

If you wear eyeglasses and look at it from the side you will see that the top is gold and white and the bottom is black and white....

Sorry, does not work for me, although I am wearing my glasses. Possibly I do not understand 'looking at it from the side'. Turning the screen every which way, I see but shades of grey. Except from the back of the screen, where I do not see any avatar at all.

Without my glasses I see a greyish blur. No gold, either.

don't move your screen, just your head.

Heres the complete image:

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/5400/goldsilverlq2.gif
It appears to only work if you wear Concave or Convex lenses.

"Gold paper and silver paper"

For those who wear concave-glasses, when your face is directed rightward and your eyes are directed leftward to see this image, the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th rows appear to be tinted gold while the rest appear to be tinted silver. When your face is directed leftward, the appearance is the reversal. For those who wear convex glasses, the appearance will be the reversal. In addition, the rows appear to slide horizontally, and the squares appear to be tapered to the dark parts.

Do you mean I have to look at it out of the corners of my eyes? In that case, I am out of luck because I wear multifocals.

Thanx all the same.

Someone should make a optical illusion that uses the ubuntu logo, even make it as a wallpaper (an annoying one!!)

IT WORKS - IT WORKS

Awesome!...I am glad you saw it... ;)

Interesting enough it works differently when looking at it out the side of your left eye, opposed to out of the side of your right eye.

Yes, there are some very puzzling asymmetries here. The most puzzling one is that the effect is the same in both eyes when looking either left or right, i.e. that both eyes see the red shift and blue shift for the same row.

By the way, the effect has not the same strength for both of my eyes because my eyes are very different and so are the glasses.

I also see orange and violet borders at the left and the right ends of the dark 'rectangles'. This, however, is not a visual illusion but merely an artifact produced by the shape of the lenses of my glasses.

One of my favourite illusions, along with the rotating snakes one:

The full-size version of your avatar seems to take on a 3-D quality if I tip my head to one side - rows 2,3,6 and 7 from the top seem to stand out from the remainder. Anyone else see that? Or maybe it's just what happens to a Windows infected brain that's exposed to a sudden overdose of Linux :)

Do you have any more? Did they come from a particular site?

The 3-D effect is produced by the brain which takes the transition from white to black as an increase in distance (as in a fog).
