View Full Version : Ubuntu featured in Mighty Avengers #4

Funny stuff: the last page of Mighty Avengers #4 shows a grub bootscreen of a PC in a missile base with the usual Ubuntu login possibilities, including the memtest.
Across the screen the words "Access denied" are visible.

The lines uttered by the horrified employees of the missile base (all the time staring at the same grub screen):

"What is that?"
"Someone's hacked into the system."
"Someone's looking for the launch codes."
"Oh my god!"

All of this proves that...

The US army uses Ubuntu in their missile bases! Woot!

Damn you beat me to it. I just finished the issue, i saw that panel right before the blow up and it said memtest86+ and went "wait a minute." I looked at the ones before it where you can see the full grub screen and laughed. Anyone know if this was product placement or Bendis or Cho (writer or illustrator) making a plug? Either ways its freaking great.

Huh? How would someone be able to hack in while the boot loader is active and before the relevant drivers for connecting to the outside world are up and running?

It's not supposed to make sense.

It's not supposed to make sense.

I agree.....sometimes on TV shows and movies one can tell that the so-called "expert" (or more likely the script writer) doesn't really know any better either. The same could be said of some of my contributions to various threads.......

That's cool.
But I don't think it's possible to hack the OS through the boot loader.:lolflag:

Maybe they used Ubuntu CR and channeled the power of God through it.

Wow i think this just became the geekiest thread on the web. Its on an OS forum, about a comic book, about a panel 1/10th of the audience caught, and about how the premise of a super villain hacking into a missile is impossible through a boot loader (a program most people don't know about).

I knew i liked this place.

They could have hacked the OS, and then put a password on GRUB.

That's why we'd beat Ultron faster than the Mighty Avengers. THEY'RE going "Ohmygodohmygooood!". We'd just point and laugh "bwahahahahaaaaaa the super advanced robot is trying to hack our boot loader!"

Ultron dies of shame. The end.

Some people are going to flame you, because there's nothing specific of Ubuntu in that comic. It's more like a Linux/Unix thing ;)

Read the Grub screen carefully.

I know it's a little blurry, but it says either
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.10-5-k7 or
Ubertz, kernel 2.6.10-5-k7 You be the judge.

which is why they are such 1337 haxors, they can hack into the computer with it not even connected to the internet!

1. They're such n00bs. Self-respecting people use a strictly command line based distro.

2. I am pretty sure GRUB lists Nexta, not Ubuntu.

The reason they're getting hacked is because they're using such an old kernel, duh.
