Mine would have to be VIM, Ryhmebox And Kopete.

I am a HUGE music person. I have like 75% of all of the Music Players in the Repos, and some not. So Exaile, Amarok, and Banshee. Honorable Mentions: Pidgin. Quod Libet, Muine.

How different is Pidgin from Gaim?
'Cause they are from the same company right?
Just they had to change the name for Gaim to pidgin?

Pidgin has over 100 bugfixes from GAIM beta. It has a newer Icon set. I also have to use it because GAIM for windows no longers exists and I symlink my ~/.purple and C:/Documents and Settings/USERNAME/Application Data/.purple. That way I keep my settings from Windows to Ubuntu and vice versa.

I see all these screenshots with really cool media players, docks, and other things that I really want to get installed on my box.

So my question is this, what applications/add-ons do you think are ESSENTIAL to an ubuntu box and which ones are just down right cool?

already know about Beryl, so you dont have to mention that one! (should save about 10000 posts.... )

My favorite music player is banshee and K3b is a really great program too. Other than those two i just use swiftfox instead of firefox and all the other "stock" apps.

Ubuntu already has all the most needed apps included, but it would be nice if it would come with Gftp, D4x, Seahorse and Exaile. They could drop Rythmbox...

I _was_ a gnome-Ubuntu user but I switched to kde-Kubuntu because the apps integrated together in KDE (so in Kubuntu too) are more and highly fitt my needs for everyday PC-using.
K3b - for cd-dvd burning
Amarok - music player, Rythmbox more poor
Konqueror - much more configurable & clean for me than nautilus and gnome file handling windows (also using it for ftp)
Kate - gedit is a good app for text editing but Kate's functions are much more better and usable than it
Kmail is simply great... never liked Evolution
Kaffeine (with xine engine) - video player, more usable for me than Totem
Yakuake - a dropdown terminal solution (like the gameconsoles in quakelikegames) very-very useful
several applets for the kde panel
Kopete - for instant messaging
Kcontrolcenter is a good solution to manage your settings
Koffice - a good office pack, but openoffice is better for me
Ktorrent - Azureus has more functions but I don't need them, and ktorrent is written in C, does not eat cpu

non kde apps I am using regularly:
mc - Midnight Commander for file handling
openoffice
gimp
acidrip
avidemux
audacity
synaptic - best for package handling
opera - the best browser ever
mplayer, xine - for playing videos
a bunch of console apps (sox, vi, bash commands, links, etc...)
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - the best multiplayer teamgame ever

The first apps I usually add to a fresh install are Gparted, Gnomebaker, and VLC.

mine would have to be:
-amarok(love it but its a bit slow to start up in gnome, no other music player comes close)
-pidgin
-thunderbird
-mplayer
-gparted
-GIMP(default)

after that it'd be compiz n emerald.
