Anything with an Intel chipset will work out of the box.

Try the Linux Emperiom. Just google for it. I bought one from last week for £20 it works out of the box. They are UK based. The card arrived the next working, they are very efficient.

I recommend a Belkin Wireless G Notebook Network Card, Part # F5D7010uk

Works out of the box, supports 802.11b/g and your local Currys will have one in stock.

That's bizzare, it's working fine on my laptop. Sorry to hear about your problems and hope you can come back at some point.

As previosuly described - Netgear WG311T:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=0&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=59397

From ebuyer - I find that lots of linux users leave reviews about their products - see the Dapper comment 14 Sep 2006 - this has an Atheros AR5212 chipset, I believe - which is madwifi compatible :)

If you get one - feel free to leave a review on their site (even if you don't get it from them!)

It's possible yours has a different chipset.

It's not unknown for wireless cards to have different chipsets and still use the same model number.

ok, the wg311t turned up yesterday. it was instantly detected and drivers (restricted) automatically loaded. most apin free wifi card ever.

however i'm a bit confused about a default keyring. when i 1st connected to AP i was asked to create a keyring password. now i have to enter that password everytime when i log in

Yep - that's the Gnome keyring - it protects all passwords. There are ways around it - search for it in Tips & Tutorials, or use Wicd (see my signature link) instead of Network Manager.
