What is your favorite compressor? I don't do much compression, but when I need it to be really good, I use bzip -9. Statistically, 7zip is the best, but also the slowest.

No, PAQ8L is.

Edit: nvm, RK is

Never heard of it.

Never heard of it.

That's probably because it's not very practical.

Imho rar is probably my favourite when sharing files with people, especially people on Windows (WinRAR is so commonly used these days...), but for myself I'd go with good ol' Gzip anytime. Bzip takes too long to process for slightly larger files.

I like superchargers, they don't lag as much as turbos even if turbos do compress the air more ;) What you are talking about is called an archiver

I don't know if the poll was referring to the algorithm used or utitility, but I usually use Gzip or zip and use 7-Zip for Windows, although I don't use their format.

Usually Gzip. I use Bzip when the size is really critical.

Tell them to get 7-zip, it handles all sorts of files, http://www.7-zip.org/.

I use 7zip. WinRAR can read those fine too, so no problem for my less educated friends. I wouldn't be surprised if WinRAR opened Gzip and Bzip just fine too. Just tell your friends: "It's like zip, open it with WinRAR or 7zip (gives link to website)."

7-Zip also has a portable edition which you can run off a flash drive or disk without installing, www.portableapps.com.

No, tar is an archiver. And I guess zip is an archiver and a compressor.
