View Full Version : Wine / Crossover "Unload the debugger and try again" error

When I try to launch Civ 3 (installed under crossover) I get the message
"
A debugger has been det
Unload the debugger and try again.
"
After three hours of searching for a solution, I've come up with... nothing. Well I've found that a lot of games have this issue when run under Crossover or Wine.
The Windows proper solutions just don't apply - running msconfig and tinkering with options in there.
And I've learned that running a nocd crack will help, but I'm holding out on that for now (I did purchase the darn thing afterall!)
Any help would be appreciated!

edit: I see it's a fully functioning and supported game with Cedega, so how's it done? I can't imagine Cedega is handing out nocd cracks with the install script - sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Does Cedega just have a better faux Windows architecture?

Just use the NoCD crack and be done with it.
Cedega is worthless for you as WINE/Crossover can already run Civ3 just fine.
There was recently a regession that affected Civ3, but if I recall it was taken care of in one of the recent WINE releases.

Well, I finally went with the nocd crack, and it launched. Unfortunately there is no sound and the text overlays itself so badly it's unplayable.
I'm still not understanding something though. How is it that Wine needs a crack, Crossover needs a crack, but Cedega does not?
Disappointed but still curious at this point,

If I'm not mistaken it's because Transgaming has licensed various software libraries needed to run games on CDs with copy protected schemes.
These copy protection methods are closed source, and proprietary meaning they can NOT be included in free software such as WINE and likely never will be.
p.s. I may have been mistaken about Civ3 working with WINE/Crossover, I was fairly sure that did but I can't get on the WINE application database (http://appdb.winehq.org) at the moment to check.
However you can pull up Cached copies of various pages by searching Google for "Civilization 3 WINE"

Over at WineHQ it's got all "Garbage" ratings for various reasons, plus one "Gold" rating for someone who also just needed the noCD crack. (Wonder how he got the fonts legible.)
Crossover has it listed as "known not to work" but the entries are dated and nothing stated applied to me at all (I could install just fine for example, and had a completely different error.)
That's interesting about Cedega, and completely answers my question on that front, so thanks!
What a pity that I had to run a CD crack at all. It's not very encouraging to Linux users to shell out cash if we have to turn right around and crack it. Ah well, that's the way the thunder rumbles.
Thanks again for the help!
