I only use one (I feel no need for others, seeing as I don't go to many ad-heavy sites). It is simply called "restarter".

All In One Gestures (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/12)
Zombie Keys (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/2335): not used that often, but still one of my favourites. Very useful for entering diacritics for European languages.
Donwload Statusbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/26)
Context Search (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/240): highlight a part of a text, right click and easily search the selected text with one of the installed search engines (the same ones that are in the search bar at the top right).

Three other favourites (couldn't resist):
Target Alert (http://www.bolinfest.com/targetalert/faq.html#fool_targetalert): displays an icon next to a link to give a visual clue about its contents (for example off-site link, pdf etc.). I couldn't find it on the Mozilla addons site though.
Dutch and British English dictionaries (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/browse/type:3)

paste and go 2 it lets you paste a url in the address bar, or a search query in the search box, without having to hit the go button, or hit enter. (like in opera)

toolbar buttons adds loads of extra buttons you can drag to the toolbars (it includes a restart firefox one too)

ubuntu forums i've never used it :D but it lets you search ubuntuforums from firefox

search domain lets you search the domain you're on using google

url link lets you highlight something like this - google.com, then right-click it and select go to url (like in opera, again)

hemp? you??? there's a surprise.

I like all kinds of non-dairy beverages (milk-like) HempMilk is one I picked up at Whole Foods the other day....

The HempMilk is actually better tasting then RiceDream (RiceMilk, my other favorite Non-Dairy beverage) but it is a bit too soupy.....the Chocalate HempMilk is not as good as Blue Daimond Almond Chocolate Milk...

Anyway I try to stay away from dairy products so I tend to get creative....I saw the HempMilk it is THC free of course, and I said why not?

I will stick with Rice Dream for my usually Non-Dairy beverage it isn't as soupy as HempMilk

Also I will stick with the Blue Daimond Almond Chocolate Milk.....it actually has less sugar and taste sweeter....not as much protein but thats ok

yeap, they're really good. i know i have lots more that are good, but just not on this distro, i'll have to boot in to something else to find them lol

there are these privacy extensions though i think everyone should have.

cookiesafe it has an option to disallow 3rd party cookies, they are what ad companies use to keep track of the pages you view. (you can do it manually though in about:config)

if anyone gets cookiesafe the option to enable is in the global tab, called allow for originating website only

EDIT i just remembered i think if you install cookiesafe you have to reset your cookie options in cookiesafe because it doesn't carry over your exisiting settings.

customizegoogle it has options to use https for many of the google services that otherwise might just use http. also in the privacy tab there's an option to change the ID PREF for google cookies, that will stop google keeping track of you. of course lots of people don't care one bit about privacy and might think i'm odd lol

I don't use too much but my favorite is Cleanup and Close normally in the downloads window there is a cleanup button. But it really annoys me when I have to "cleanup" and then have to go to the "x" button to close it, especially since I have to use a laptop. So this extension replaces it with a "Cleanup and Close" button. It does both at the same time!

That is why I like it. I download lots of junk like programs for my Windows computer and Linux isos and program source code for my Ubuntu system.

What Taylor said, and Tor is an anonymity program, open source, and available for everything including your toaster. :P

For those who don't know what Tor is:

Tor (The Onion Router) is a free software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software) implementation of second-generation onion routing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion_routing) — a system enabling its users to communicate anonymously (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymity) on the Internet. Originally sponsored by the US Naval Research Laboratory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Naval_Research_Laboratory), Tor became an Electronic Frontier Foundation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Frontier_Foundation) (EFF) project in late 2004. The EFF supported Tor financially until November 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_2005),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_%28anonymity_network%29#_note-0) and continues to provide web hosting for the project.
Like all current low latency (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_latency) anonymity networks (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anonymity_network&action=edit), Tor is vulnerable to correlation attacks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_analysis#In_computer_security) from attackers who can watch both ends of a user's connection.

Overview

Tor aims to protect its users against traffic analysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_analysis) attacks. Tor operates an overlay network of onion routers that enables two things: anonymous outgoing connections and anonymous hidden services.

Anonymous outgoing connections

Users of the Tor network run an onion proxy on their machine. This software connects out to Tor, periodically negotiating a virtual circuit through the Tor network. Tor employs cryptography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptography) in a layered manner (hence the onion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion) analogy), ensuring perfect forward secrecy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_forward_secrecy) between routers. At the same time, the onion proxy software presents a SOCKS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOCKS) interface to its clients. SOCKS-aware applications may be pointed at Tor, which then multiplexes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexing) the traffic through a Tor virtual circuit.
Once inside the Tor network, the traffic is sent from router to router, ultimately reaching an exit node at which point the cleartext (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleartext) packet is available and is forwarded on to its original destination. Viewed from the destination, the traffic appears to originate at the Tor exit node.
Tor's application independence sets it apart from most other anonymity networks: it works at the TCP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_Control_Protocol) stream level. Applications commonly anonymised using Tor include IRC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat), instant messaging (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging) and browsing the Web (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web). When browsing the Web, Tor is often coupled with Privoxy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privoxy) — a filtering proxy server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server) — that aims to add privacy at the application layer.

Weaknesses

DNS leaks

As with many anonymous web surfing systems, direct DNS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System) requests are usually still performed by many applications, without using the Tor proxy. Solutions such as the previously mentioned Privoxy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privoxy) or using the command 'torify' included with the Tor distribution are possible solutions to this problem.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_%28anonymity_network%29#_note-1) Additionally, applications using SOCKS5 — which supports name-based proxy requests — can route DNS requests through Tor, having lookups performed at the exit node and thus receiving the same anonymity as other Tor traffic.

Murdoch and George Danezis from University of Cambridge presented an article,[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_%28anonymity_network%29#_note-2) in the 2005 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, Oakland, California, USA, May 8 – 11, 2005. They presented traffic-analysis techniques that allow adversaries with only a partial view of the network to infer which nodes are being used to relay the anonymous streams and therefore greatly reduce the anonymity provided by Tor. They have also shown that otherwise unrelated streams can be linked back to the same initiator.

Etiquette and abuse

Because Tor is capable of anonymising arbitrary TCP traffic, it attracts its fair share of abuse. Routers maintain an exit policy of what traffic is and is not permitted to leave the Tor network through that node. Using a combination of addresses and ports, it is possible to combat most major abuses of the Tor network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_networking). Potential abuses include:
Bandwidth hoggingIt is considered impolite to transfer massive amounts of data across the Tor network — the onion routers are run by volunteers using their own bandwidth at their own cost.E-mail Anonymous usage of SMTP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Mail_Transfer_Protocol) (i.e., e-mail) can result in spam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_%28electronic%29). Consequently the default exit policy of Tor nodes rejects outgoing connections to port 25, the port used for SMTP.
Anonymous hidden services

Although Tor's most popular feature is its provision of anonymity to clients, it can also provide anonymity to servers. By using the Tor network, it is possible to host servers in such a way that their network location is unknown. In order to access a hidden service, Tor must also be used by the client.
Hidden services are accessed through the Tor-specific .onion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.onion) pseudo top-level domain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudo_top-level_domain). The Tor network understands this TLD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-level_domain) and routes data anonymously to the hidden service. The hidden service then hands over to standard server software, which should be configured to listen only on non-public interfaces. Services that are reachable through Tor hidden services and the public Internet are susceptible to correlation attacks, and consequently are not really hidden.
An added advantage of Tor hidden services is that, because no public IP address (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address) is required, services may be hosted behind firewalls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall_%28networking%29) and NAT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation).
As of 6.6.07, the 'hidden wiki', the only hidden service index site linked to from the World Wide Web appears to have gone down. As it provided an 'entry point' to the network of hidden services, and both the official Tor site and IRC channel seem reluctant to explain or indeed acknowledge the disappearance so far (or offer an alternative), this capability is rendered somewhat useless to Tor users who do not already have the address of a specific hidden service they want to visit.

Here are some excellent extensions that I don't think have been listed yet.

Tabs Open Relative (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1956) - Tabs Open Relative makes all new tabs open to the right of the current tab, rather than at the far right of the tab bar.

Duplicate Tab (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/28) - Duplicate Tab allows you to clone a tab along with its history.

zoomFox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1067) - Adds a context menu item ('View with zoomFox') for viewing images using advanced controls: The image is opened in a new tab which also contains a thumbnail view of the image used to scroll around more easily, zoom controls with various zoom levels, easy scrolling by clicking and dragging the image itself etc. Ideal for viewing very large images easily.

Adblock Filterset.G Updater ("https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1136') - This is a companion extension to Adblock or Adblock Plus and should be used in conjunction with it. This extension automatically downloads the latest version of Filterset.G every 4-7 days. Filterset.G is an excellent set of filters maintained by G for Adblock that blocks most ads on the internet.

Fetch Text URL ("https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/518') - Highlight plain text URLs and rightclick to open them like a regular clickable URLs.

No offence intended, and firefox is a fine browser, but you DO realize, I hope, that if you would use opera (http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?platform=linux) instead, you wouldn't have any need for "extensions adding" and "finetuning" and you would, as an added and most important bonus, gain considerable speed vis-à-vis firefox, just using the opera browser as it is, out of the box (try and judge by yourself).

Now, if you are happy with firefox and its extensions, stick with it/them.
But, despite my avatar image, i need speed and real anti-advertising and anti-popup power on the web, and this, until now, only opera can provide.

While I'm an Opera user myself (use it as my main browser in Windows..not as much as in Linux) I'd have to say Firefox's Ad Block > Opera's ad block system. Though I haven't played with Kestral's system that much, but is it still requiring you to manually edit the URLfilter.ini?

I know you can right click and block whatever, but that takes time for all the sites I visit. It's easier just to grab a block list. (what I usually did was just copy the one from Firefox into the urlfilter.ini)

urlfilter.ini indeed, but you can find aplenty scripts ready and immediately usable on the web, for instance http://martin.krischik.com/index.php/Main/OperaBlocklist. That's the same as firefox, as you point out, but the right click addition remains a godsend, in my opinion, because it works forever FOR THE PLACES YOU OFTEN VISIT.

So, let's say you want an uncluttered http://www.yahoo.com or an uncluttered http://www.guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/), or whatever... as you know, you just rightclick the first time you visit and hey presto! No more idiotical ads forever (well not exactly forever: just until they change http advertising method, but then - when and if it happens - you'd just right click another time and remain clean for the next months/years).

So I don't agree with you: opera out of the box beats firefox with all the extensions you may add, and opera's general speed is no match for firefox.

This said, firefox is a fine browser, and it's open source, so I fully understand people using it instead of opera even if quite slower and even if much more difficult to configure correctly.

My top five:
1. FireFTP - best FTP client I've ever used, and it's a Firefox plugin!?
2. Personas - Quick and easy themes
3. Google Toolbar - I primarily use it for highlighting my search terms and for the occasional quick search (is it just me, or does the quick search just plain suck in FF2? I hope 3 fixed/s it...
4. Web Developer - Aside from being a great tool for testing out my PHP stuff, I've used it countless times to recover passwords with its form tools.
5. Download statusbar - so much more efficient and space saving than the default downloads popup.
Things that didn't make my top five:
- Zombie Keys - So I can enter accents and stuff
- Full Fullscreen - removes the nav. bar from the fullscreen view.
- Stylish - Force a site to use a different CSS stylesheet
- Leet Key - 50 1 (4n 74|k 70 7h053 p35ky 12 y34r 0|d5

Ah, good to see another FireFTP fan. You can make it feel more like a standalone application by doing the following:

1) Open up a terminal and run:

gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/fireftp.desktop

2) Paste the following in the file, then save it and exit:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=FireFTP
Comment=Transfer and edit online files
GenericName=FTP Client
Exec=firefox -chrome "chrome://fireftp/content/fireftp.xul"
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=gftp.png
Categories=Application;Network;

This creates a shortcut in Applications>Internet just for FireFTP. :)

Post your firefox extensions and what they do so others can get suggestions for new useful extensions.

Adblock Plus + Adblock Filterset.G Updater: Pretty obvious, never see a web ad again.

Download Statusbar: Get rid of that pesky download window.

Fasterfox: Browse faster

Fission: Moves the loading bar, and other functions of the status bar to the address bar so I can disable the status bar and save screen space. (note that download statusbar still works with the status bar disabled, the status bar pops up when I download something then goes away.)

Stealther: Browse nefarious websites with out leaving a trace and with out leaving a suspicious cleared history.

Tab Mix Plus: More control of tabs is always a good thing.

These are the extensions I run, along with their own descriptions.

Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.1.3 (http://www.pierceive.com/) - Synchronizes Adblock with Filterset.G
Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3 (http://adblockplus.org/) - Ads were yesterday!
CuteMenus - Crystal SVG 1.9.1 (http://www.cutemenuproject.com/) - Adds icons to all menus.
Extension List Dumper 1.9.0 (http://sogame.awardspace.com/) - Dumps a list of the installed extensions.
Fission 0.9 (http://mozilla.zeniko.ch/fission.html) - Progress bar in the address bar (Safari style).
FlashGot 0.7.2 (http://flashgot.net) - Enables single and massive ("all" and "selection") downloads using the most popular external download managers for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD (dozens currently supported, see Extension's Home Page for details). FlashGot offers also a Build Gallery functionality which helps to synthetize full media galleries in one page from serial contents originally scattered on several pages, for easy and fast "download all".
Gmail Notifier 0.6.2.2 (http://www.nexgenmedia.net/extensions/) - A notifier for Gmail accounts.
keyconfig 20060828.1 (http://mozilla.dorando.at/) - Rebind your keys.
Linkification 1.3.3 (http://yellow5.us/firefox/linkification/) - Converts text links into genuine, clickable links.
NoScript 1.2.6 (http://noscript.net) - Extra protection for your Firefox: NoScript allows JavaScript, Java (and other plugins) only for trusted domains of your choice (e.g. your home-banking web site). This whitelist based pre-emptive blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality... Experts will agree: Firefox is really safer with NoScript.
Personal Menu 3.0.9 (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3895/) - Replace the conservative menus, beautify your Firefox!
Restart Firefox 0.3 (http://extensions.jedbrown.net) - Restart Firefox with ease
Tab Mix Plus 0.3.6.0.070923 (http://tmp.garyr.net) - Tab browsing with an added boost.
User Agent Switcher 0.6.9 (http://chrispederick.com/work/useragentswitcher/) - Adds a menu and a toolbar button to switch the user agent of the browser.

It's not that big of a list, I admit. I used to hop on the 'run everything I can' bandwagon, but these days I just tend to use that pool of experience from having run a lot of extensions to add features as I realise I need them. This is all I feel I need, for the moment.

I also admit that a lot of these extensions are to improve the appearance (at least for me) of Firefox, and to help make it more compact. Just to show what I mean, here's a screenshot...

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/2862/firefoxscreenshot140108fu8.th.png (http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=firefoxscreenshot140108fu8.png)

At the very left is Perfect Menu, in one menu I can include only the menu items I want from other menus such as File, View, Tools, et cetera. Since I don't use that many elements of the dropdown menus, I find that very efficient and space-saving. I also have that menu bound to alt+F via keyconfig.

Next are the back/forward buttons, nothing special there, but after that we have the URL-bar. For the URL-bar I use fission, which combines the progress-bar into the URL-bar and shows the destination of links when one hovers over them (it has a few other options too). This eliminates my need for the status bar, so I have that hidden by default.

After that is my bookmarks folder, and the icons for ABP, NoScript, and GMail Notifier.

The end result is that I have a lot of screen real-estate to give to page rendering.

Mouse gestures: mostly because I want a consistent back ability. Not depending where my mouse pointer is. If the "Back"-item would be always on top of the context menu I'd probably just use it, but if the pointer is on an image it shows another menu with "View image" stuff.

Adblock: blocking annoying content.

Flashblock: displaying only the flash content I want.

Tab Mix Plus: mouse wheel on tab bar and some other details.

You do not need this extension.
You can just edit about:config

look for the key: browser.download.manager.retention

change the value from 1 to 0

look for the key: browser.download.manager.closeWhenDone
change the value to true.

The Mozilla Corporation would get their arses sued off.

Some sites ban Firefox citing Mozilla's support of AdBlock. Doesn't harm me though (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en_GB; rv:1.9b3) Gecko Epiphany/2.22).

Also, I found WOT (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3456), which I find to be a wonder.

The last one rocks! I can have web apps running directly from desktop, just like normal installed programs.

What are your top five firefox add-ons.
Please only list add-ons that you would give at least 9/10+ marks (therefore if you only want to list one / two that would do fine.
Thanks.

My favourite add-ons for Firefox:
tab mix plus
tiny menu
download them all

I have evolved to using gmail, Google Calender and Google Documents exclusively. I will have to look into the 3 Google extensions you have listed:

Hey Rav,

I'm still using OOo, because all of my client correspondence is sent PDF, and I can convert on the fly with Writer. I've meant to look into Google docs, but just haven't gotten around to it. Must do soon...

Hope all's well,
OC
