I'd love to eventually be able to use Compiz Fusion and whatnot, and I'm getting fed up with AMD/ATi's sub-par graphics drivers. So, I plan to switch to nVidia at some point. My current card is a Radeon 9800 XT. What would the nVidia equivalent to this card be? I don't really need anything better (a little better definitely wouldn't hurt). I don't play very many games (and the ones that I do play aren't incredibly recent) so I don't need a ridiculously expensive card.

What nVidia card would you suggest?

I don't know anything about ati cards, but the 7600GT is what's considered an "average" nVidia card. It will give you decent performance out of games (though don't expect incredible), and you'll of course be able to run all the trimmings like Fusion and whatnot. The 7900GS is a more powerful option.

If you want a real powerhouse, go for one of the 8-series cards.

For the time when the 9800 was released, nvidias equivalent at the time was the 6600, or the 6200, which is what I bought to replace my Ati 9800 pro.

For the time when the 9800 was released, nvidias equivalent at the time was the 6600, or the 6200, which is what I bought to replace my Ati 9800 pro.

The 6200 has lower specs than the Radeon 9800 because for the 6 series it was the low end card. The Radeon 9800 was the high end card for that series, so I would think the geforce 6800 would be closer.

But as others have said, the 7600 card is pretty cheap now, and it is much better than the Radeon 9800. It is what I use, and I'm pleased with it. When I bought my card, it was between the 6800 and the 7600 because the price was pretty close. The reason it was initially hard to decide is because 6800 is the high-end card for the 6 series, and 7600 is not the high-end card for the 7 series. But when I checked things out, you get more bang for your buck with the 7600.

Go here (http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=0) to see the specs on any video card. I recommend clicking on "Split List" for ATI and nVidia to see their specs.

Hmm except the 8800 GTX or similar , the rest of the cards dont offer that much superior performance than the 7 series .

For example , the 8600 GT only beats the 7600 GT marginally and if u get the DD2 version its slower than a 7600 gt which has ddr3 ram. And u can easily avoid the 8500 GT and lower .

Of course if u need directX 10 then its a better choice maybe .

So the 7600 GT is still a nice mid range card i think .:D ( i own one )
