7-Eleven gets "Simpsons" makeover to promote movie

BY MATTHEW CHAYES
Special to Newsday

July 3, 2007

Take Oscar Wilde's 19th century observation that "life imitates art far more than art imitates life." Caffeinate it with Squishee frozen carbonated beverage. Add a dose of 21st century movie marketing. Pour the mix atop a dozen or so 7-Eleven convenience stores across America.

That's the recipe to publicize "The Simpsons" movie, to be released July 27, and a 7-Eleven in Times Square is one of the locations that, as of yesterday, became less a convenience store and more a giant "Simpsons" ad.

On the first day of the transformation, people stopped to gawk at the real-life Kwik-E-Mart, which days earlier was only a satirical cartoon send-up of 7-Eleven.

"Thank you for loitering," says a sign featuring a portrait of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the show's thickly accented Indian-American proprietor of the real, um, fake, Kwik-E-Mart. "Please come again."

Passersby in droves whipped out cameras to take pictures.

The store, on 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues, isn't being paid anything by "The Simpsons" producers. Fans making pilgrimages, as one patron described the trips, were mostly young adult males - 7-Eleven's target consumer.

Steve Zegers, 30, said he normally patronizes his local 7-Eleven in Wantagh, near the Long Island Rail Road, but detoured on his way to Penn Station yesterday afternoon and "came totally out of my way" to Times Square, just to check out the store made famous in the show.

"It's been part of my life longer than it hasn't been part of my life," Zegers said after taking a souvenir shot with his cell phone camera.

Exiting the store carrying a Yoo-hoo-flavored Squishee and a "Simpsons"-inspired comic book, New Jersey trucker Brent Fournier, 32, said he lost $75 by taking off work to drive into Manhattan. That didn't include the hour-and-a-half he spent finding parking, the money he shelled out to park his Dodge pickup in a garage in the heart of midtown or the cost of his newly purchased "Simpsons" regalia.

For avid fans of the long-running TV cartoon - the series has aired since December 1989 - the store became a clubhouse for discussing "Simpsons" minutiae amid Bart cookies, Homer bobble-head dolls and Moe and Barney talking bottle openers.

Film student and longtime fan David Svedosh, 22, commuted uptown from TriBeCa to buy Frosted KrustyO's-themed cereal. Much to his disappointment, the store had sold out of the cereal early in the morning.

After holding an impromptu freezer-side debate with a reporter over which cartoon series is superior ("The Simpsons?" "Family Guy?" "South Park?"), Svedosh said he was disappointed in the store.

"It's a barely dressed-up 7-Eleven with a couple of cardboard cutouts," Svedosh said.

Then a store publicist, Maureen Abdelnour, clutching news releases and wearing a Kwik-E-Mart uniform like the rest of the 7-Eleven employees, popped over to promise Svedosh that the store would get another cereal shipment the next day.

"Oh, yeah," Svedosh said with a smirk. "I'll be back. I gotta get that cereal."http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-nysimp035279638jul03,0,4066911,print.story
