Hi,
My wife's Treo phone is about dead.
She want a treo like phone with proper keyboard OR a touchscreen phone with a software popup keyboard.
Preferably not another treo due to size and perceived reliability, our friends and family have had several treo's go down.

Is there a linux phone out there yet that meets these needs?

currently these seem to fit her desires, but she has specifically asked for a linux one!

HTC710 http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=145682
Samsung SGH-i600 http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=148271
Nokia E61i http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=146174
UBiQUiO 501 http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=139977

anyhow you get the idea.

So is there a linux phone, or a chance that any of these will be more sympathetic to sync any kind of data with Ubuntu?

thanks for any ideas

Jeff

OpenMoko.com fully open source phone running embedded linux. They only just released the 1st generation developer's edition (but anyone can buy one). The public mass market release is this fall and will feature some new hardware including wifi, camera and a faster cpu.

The Neo1973 also has built in GPS.

Might not be what she is looking for right now with it being 1st gen, but if she can wait til fall (maybe get a cheap temporary phone until then) I think you will find she would be very happy with it.

Yeah, seen that. But its a bit outdated, not many have keyboards, and not many available in the UK (Should have said UK available!)

OpenMoko.com

Thats seems to have potential, quite nice.
The trouble with us techno-geeks (yes the wife is one also) is that "the next big thing is always just around the corner"

wonder when it will be available in UK, the consumer version.

You should be able to sync up to a certain extent with the Symbian OS on the Nokia (e.g. see here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=260676&page=4)) - I've used the same system to sync up a N80 and N95 and I can get calendar and contacts synced with evolution - obviously file transfer is fairly easy with mass storage mode or BT.

Wish Nokia would port PC Suite *sigh*

The other 3 are windows mobile phones which are a horror to sync up - well they were about a year ago when I last checked it out

Yeah, i've seen that multysync thing
It will allow syncML I think.

My HTC 620 WM5 has a syncML client installed, perhaps i can get that to work as well via the same setup and wifi.

I've actually just found this program here http://www.modaco.com/WM5torage-t238545.html

that makes the card in a WM5 phone a mass storage device (like plugging a memory stick into the PC). I use a program to create a backup of my internal memory to card, so this is a convenient way to copy my backup to the PC.

I have just got syncML on my phone syncing to an online syncML server.
I use bluetooth to send .cab files to the phone/pda
So i'm sorta covered it seems.

It also allows me access to the phone from windows PC's without activesync to copy large files across

That Neo 1973 has turned out to be one hell of a phone
