I was going to put out $600 to buy my wife a new computer because hers was slow. Luckily the new Dell Ubuntu machines are not a great deal, so I decided to wait. At any rate, she has a Dell Inspiron 1100. It has a 2ghz processor, which is pretty good. But guess the ram! It had a paltry 128mb. So for $70, I ordered 1gig. Slow computer solved.

Just dont be an idiot like me, and consider an upgrade first, before you consider buying new.

Isn't this blatantly obvious?

Isn't this blatantly obvious?

Yes. I think the real question here is: Isn't the fact that it's blatantly obvious blatantly obvious? :)

It's not always obvious to those who are not gear heads. My wife uses a Sony Vaio we bought in 2001. She does website work constantly having up to 50 or more windows open with Photoshop, Notepat, texpad, ie, firefox, etc; all on 512MB of SDRAM PC133. I just recently upgraded her processor from a P4 1.6 to P4 2.5. I will say it is not lightening fast, but it works very well.
Now if I could just convince her to upgrade to Ubuntu.

New laptops are more fun though :) I would love to do both the upgrade and get a new laptop if I had the money for it. that'd be really nice

I find it difficult to believe a laptop with a 2ghz processor came with 128mb ram

Simple upgrades like new CPU, Memory or hard drive space are the first three area's to look at when your upgrading either a laptop or a workstation for that matter. For beginners who don't know these things will not always be aware of that. Took me three week inbetween upgrade to get 1 gig of ram on my laptop. Now I think I might go for a CPU upgrade if I can get it for my laptop.

Many buy just by looking at the processor, its speed and HDD capacity. They do not realize that larger RAM with lower speed CPU can run much better. Even Compaq sold many desktops with just 128 MB RAM, just to show a low price.

Isn't "blatantly obvious" redundantly redundant?

But yes, it is blatant.

Well 128mb was common 5 or 6 years ago (I remember because that's what's in my dad's from-the-early-days-of-XP computer). The computer I'm using at the moment is 4 or 5 years old, and it's got a 3GHz CPU. Based on that, I have no trouble believing that 2GHz CPUs and 128MB of RAM were both on the shelf together.
