OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.

Netherlands-based Automotive Navigation Data (AND) has agreed with the OpenStreetMap Foundation to donate digital maps of the Netherlands, China and India to the OpenStreetMap community, the company said Wednesday

The goal of the deal is to create the most up-to-date map in the market, AND said, suggesting that it recognizes the power of community-based Web development. OpenStreetMap is a freely available, editable online map of the world; registered users can edit the map in much the same way registered users of online encyclopedia Wikipedia can edit its information content.

"It is known that a small percentage of a map is not representing the present situation. With the help of the community, AND aims to close this gap and be able to a deliver a map that is 100 percent correct." stated Maarten Oldenhof, AND CEO. Initially, AND will make its street level data of the Netherlands and the major road networks of China and India available to the OpenStreetMap community.

"We are very happy with the map donation of AND. With this additional map data we hope to create a bigger mapping community and be able to cover more and more areas," stated Steve Coast, one of the OpenStreetMap founders. "Overall we want to enable users of mapping data to also be contributors, from reporting errors to doing full surveys," he said.

Oldenhof further suggested that the current generation of Web-based communities and hosted services, often referred to as Web 2.0, are important for map accuracy. "We think Web 2.0 will be the ultimate tool for map updates," he said. "With this partnership we work with the people that have a keen insight into how a community works around maps."
