View Full Version : Websites Unsupported By Linux

I think that we should post a list of websites that do not support linux here. Then, everyone should go to these websites and request that they add support for it. I have noticed that there are a few different posts on the forum about how either launchcast or abc do not support linux, and was thinking that it would probably be better if we had a single place where all of these incompatible websites were listed. What does everyone else think about this?

to be honest, it's usually not their fault. they often don't even know that they have a linux demographic out there, and they also often use flash to stream their videos. flash for linux is made by adobe, and is often not up to standards, so...yeah. The biggest thing is though, that most of them don't know you exist. Instead of just sending them emails and complaining about it, you could instead send them emails with a little complaint, and a way they can fix the issue. They'll probably see the emails and think 'WTF? who are these queer folk claiming we're discriminating against them?'

If the above paragraph made no sentence, my apologies. I'm just about to go to bed.

what wars the problem...
i never had problem's to visit a website... watch video's, listen to music and all the other stuff...
it's maybe your browser or your browser plugin's (add-ons)...
running mozilla or opera you get these plugin's/add-ons automaticly...
i prefer mozilla, mozilla is stable, looks better, opera don't...

First, I have checked the CNN video page and it does work as long as you have flash installed. I didn't see anything at all on this website saying that internet explorer or windows were required to view the website either.

I agree maniacmusician that if state how the website can be fixed to work with other operating systems, then the websites will be much more likely to fix the problem. In the case of websites such as yahoo launchcast, this probably isn't true, because we are asking them to rewrite their system to work without active X. But in the case of Silkroad Online, where they just have an error page that you are redirected to if you are not running internet explorer from windows, then stating the cause of the problem would go a long way towards fixing it. Basically, I still think that repeted complaints go a long way towards fixing the websites, but, especially if the problem is really easy to fix, stating how it can be fixed is probably a great idea as well.

For those of you that say you never have problems visiting a website online. Have any of you used yahoo's launchcast radio on linux? I loved to use it when I used windows, but had to give it up when I switched to linux because Active X is not compatible with firefox. How have you gotten around this?

How about discrimination against anyone who doesn't happen to live in the US? ;)

Good point. I've had the occasional situation where I've wanted to visit a website but have been blocked because my computer's IP address was supposedly from the wrong country.

Another niggle of mine, more of an annoyance than a real problem, is being told to ring a 1-800 number for support. Although there are ways around it, the telco I'm connected to uses 0-800 numbers instead, and phone numbers beginning with 1-8 are used by them to set up extra services in your phone lime.

ies4linux doesn't work on my system. For some reason, internet explorer refuses to connect to the internet. Also, I hate to use internet explorer because it opens your computer up to a whole bunch of security flaws. I think that it is better to use only one browser such as firefox or opera and get all of the websites to support those web browsers. I have not used launchcast for a year now because it is not supported on linux. These websites lose out on a whole bunch of customers because they don't support the systems of their customers.

The trouble with websites that you have problems with is that the webmasters try to be too damned clever. Instead of using straightforward .html or .pdf files they feel that they must use things which are more complicated. I run two domains which are for information only, I do not include video or anything specialist like that.

I maintain the sites with Ubuntu v7.04, Open Office, Firefox and gFTP. One site has photo content and slideshows which work with all systems.

The content on http://www.cnn.com/video/ works for me... it's the "Live Video" link on that page that launches a separate window that says "Unsupported Platform Error".

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 and many other flash movies and windows media movies work fine. I also performed the steps at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/WindowsCodecs

I also perused:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=668852&highlight=cnn+live

This page says you have to use the windows media player:
http://www.cnn.com/help/live.html

I complained to them at:

And I submitted a digg story at:

This crap needs to stop!!

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 and many other flash movies and windows media movies work fine.

I also am unable to play the cnn.com LIVE feed, with the same "Unsupported Platform Error". Can't the HTTP browser ID string be forged to look like Windows?

I am on up-to-date Ubuntu 7.04 with w32codecs etc etc installed.

The CNN _CLIPS_ of individual stories play fine, for the most part, with the exception that sometimes the advertisement plays, but then playback stops. Hitting the clip again then plays.

For what it is worth, I finally played cnn.com LIVE in vmware.

You are NOT missing much. This is NOT a real CNN network feed. It is more of a hosted clip show and cross promotion of other CNN online content. I am hoping they at least cut in with the real CNN live primary election coverage.

It really irritates me that websites use Windows Media Player to stream their content. Why can't they use Flash? Or Real Player? Something that is universal to all operating systems?

This discrimination nonsense needs to STOP.

It's not their fault?

Flash isn't universal if you like freedom.

Windows Live Mail comes to mind (they give you a lite version).

Try clicking on 'Blackboard Vista' or 'WebCTVista.' It gives me a 'Failed to connect' error in Firefox.

If you click on 'browser tune-up' in the upper right corner it says this: 'You appear to be running a Linux operating system. This is unsupported as a client operating system.'

Using user-agent switcher does nothing to fix the problem, though it does give me this message if I go to tune-up: 'You appear to be running a Windows operating system.'

If I'm doing something stupid here please tell me. I'd rather not waste space on a Windows partition.
