Just today my Ubuntu box has come under a series of attacks from a user without root privileges. I had hoped Linux would make my PC more secure. :)

You might want to check out a firewall. One place to start is "FireStarter".

Hmm much like a cat having a quick walk across the keyboard when you least expect it.

That's so funny on so many levels....

You might want to try "Ubuntu - Day Care Edition". I hear it's costs a monthly fee to use, but during the day at least, it helps prevent a lot of these would-be hackers from roaming the streets.

PS: :D

I find an unplugged keyboard most valuable in these situations (see my avatar) =]

Honestly I like the intruder you have. I think he is practicing mission impossible training.

Or having someone walk past your desk and bumping it just as you click your mouse.....

Possibly the best security method involves digging a hole in the back yard, dismantling your computer gear, disconnecting it completely, and burying it in concrete.

Firestarter is not a firewall. Ubuntu has a built-in firewall. ALL Linuxes have it. It's called iptables, and it's part of the kernel. Firestarter is just a GUI for configuring iptables so that you can avoid the command line.

I find keyboard replacement therapy best for hardened abusers!

Sorry, my mistake - I should have known better! (I'm fairly new to Ubuntu too......) My ehernet/wireless router also came with a firewall built in

(great thread :) )

I suggest to keep a disconnected keyboard along the "official" one.
This may keep the little hacker busy for a while.
Not sure how can it last, they learn very quickly nowadays

Andre

I bet in a few years he'll be able to delete your music folder and then magic marker the screen with "pwned".

see if you can convert this to run on ubuntu:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Miscellaneous/BlueScreen.mspx

i'm sure if he thinks you're running windows, he'll go back to playing with toys!

You know what they say about security. If they get physical access to the HW, no security is left.

I think they are spreading fast, I've got the same type of hacker running around here. So far I managed to block his attempts. But one day I'm sure he'll breach my fences.
