View Full Version : The best GNOME Theme that I have ever seen so far

wersdaluv

Nimbus (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Nimbus+(Ubuntu+and+Debian)?content=54755); Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s default theme; is the best GNOME Theme that I have ever seen. It is very professional, is well-polished, and will satisfy most people's taste. This theme can compete with the Aqua Interface and Vista's look and feel.

The problem with this theme is that, the Ubuntu logo is replaced by some other logo, but I fixed it by deleting that logo. Also, with this theme, pop-ups like meta data and such still have the default Ubuntu color scheme.

EDIT:
You have to use it for you to understand what I am saying. Screenshots do not show its real beauty.

I'm guessing colors for libnotify and for mouseovers are located in gconf, but I don't really know.

I don't like it. The window decoration reminds me of XP, and that's never a good thing. I think if they set the fonts a little smaller and blended the colors a little better, it'd be wonderful.

But the scrollbars and gtk buttons are very nice.

Yeah, same. I use a black glassy Beryl theme for window borders ("scaled black mod" is the name, it's one of the ones that's installed with emerald-themes), but I really like that icon theme. I have a modified Human theme (Human Ultra was the name, I think) set right now. It comes with about 10 different colors, so I have the grey one set at the moment, but I think I'll switch to those icons.

Replace these files with the image you want, and give it the same name and make it the proper size (which is in the path):
/usr/share/icons/nimbus/24x24/devices/battery.png
/usr/share/icons/nimbus/48x48/devices/battery.png
/usr/share/icons/nimbus/192x192/devices/battery.png

There's also a gnome-dev-battery.png in each of those locations that has the battery with a little launcher arrow, but I don't think you need to worry about it unless you want a shortcut on your desktop. Unless your panel is amazingly huge, you shouldn't have to worry about the 192x192 either.

It would be so much better if the nimbus icons where more integrated with GNOME. I noticed that in the nimbus icon theme, there are very nice power off, log out, and many many other amazing icons that are not being used because the file names should be renamed for Ubuntu's GNOME to use the icons. Also, the horribly huge distributor logo makes the panel really large. Editing the file names of the icons will surely help.

Can someone make the nimbus icons more integrated with GNOME and put it on GNOME-look.org? It's really very nice especially when it is more integrated with linux's GNOME. I guess the file names of the icons where designed for Solaris.

This is really nice. I've seen nicer looking themes before, but few are as usable and complete as this one.

What I like most about it, however, is that it's fast. I like things that look nice, but most of the eye candy I come across sacrifices too much speed. It's not that I can't run these themes, but that I choose not to run them, because I value speed too much. I like my computer to be snappy and Nimbus satisfies that requirement.

Anyone got a deb for the latest nimbus theme? The 0.0.8 version?

The theme is out here--> http://dlc.sun.com/osol/jds/downloads/extras/ but I am having problems installing it. After installing it using sudo make install (which seemed successful), I had problems using the newly installed theme.

The Ubuntu Nimbus link in the original post says that is based off of Gentoo ebuild. If you follow that hyperlink it takes you to this page:

http://gnome-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=54755&file1=54755-1.png&file2=&file3=&name=Nimbus+%28Ubuntu+and+Debian%29

The screenshots for the Gentoo theme look much better. Has anyone tried both? If so, are they the same theme, or does the gentoo version really look that much better? Is there anything to watch out for if you want to use the Gentoo theme on Ubuntu or straight Debian?

I packed nimbus 0.0.8 for Gutsy (AMD64). On public demand, I can also pack the GTK engine for i386. The icon package can be used on all architectures.

You can download the .debs here:

Use on your own risk!!

Please note, I reserve the right to temporarily suspend download if traffic gets too heavy - as this is also my private DSL connection :-)

For AMD64, I just finished building, the .debs are available. x86 takes longer as currently, I have no virtual x86 machine running - Gutsy is till missing the VMware kernels, also VirtualBox does yet not work on Gutsy. Since I already updated to gutsy on all machines, you have to wait abnother 10 days or build it on your own - it is really not difficult, just follow the instructions.

Do you have an idea on how to fix the naming of the icons? A lot of icons from the theme are not being used by Ubuntu because of naming convention issues.

I am not a packaging guru, but I think that this could be done by setting respective symlinks in the post-installation script of the package. For this, one would need to know what icons we talk about.

However, I cant do this for time reasons - however, feel free to try, in the worst case, the package will not install.

In the next days, I will create a blueprint in launchpad for repository inclusion of Nimbus - a professional package maintainer could then address this and other issues.

and by the way: Gutsy absolutely rocks! :guitar:

If they would only give up this ugly ugly ugly ugly ugly brown color scheme :( But since this is personal thing of Mark, we obviously have to fix bug #1 with this colors :-)

wolfchri, actually, we should only do a map between current nimbus naming conventions, and current gtk naming conventions. For example, just put line <nimbus file name> <gtk file name>. Of course, we don't need to put same names. Then we it's very easy to write a simple script, which will make a soft links in gtk convention to files.

Joe_Bishop
November 1st, 2007, 12:14 PM
I wrote a script (on python, need python 2.4 or later), which compares two iconsets placed in different folders, and shows what icons, which is present in the first theme, is absent in the second one.
Usage examples:
./checkDiff --source /usr/share/icons/nimbus/ --subtractor /usr/share/icons/gnome
This output file names (without extensions), which is present in nimbus theme, but default gnome theme does not have a fit. On my machine this script shows 174 files. Our goal is to determine, what name have appropriate icons in gnome theme (almost all of them have the actual prototypes in gnome theme). Then we write a list of <nimbus file> : <gnome file>. And then we simply make soft links according to the list.

Joe_Bishop

I see many people using dark themes, those are just bad for the eyes, because most web pages are white making the contrast too high.

I'm a KDE user and I'd just like a clean GTK theme with small buttons for the few GTK apps I use. The default buttons are too large, making the apps look bloated.

I used to think like this, but I've changed my mind. Some time ago, I decided to give a dark theme some time, and I after a while really liked it (to my surprise). Websites were a problem until I discovered userstyles.org (http://userstyles.org/) and was able to have a black google, black ubuntuforums, black youtube, black gmail, etc.

It takes while to get used to it, but dark setups are very pleasant. Though I'm back on a light setup, I'm sure I'll move over to the dark side in the near future for a short while.

I'm not a big fan of dark themes. Something always seem to stick out. I can use them occasionally though. Dust is quite nice for example. Btw can anyone tell me where I find the wallpaper for the attached screenshot of Dust?

I like the screenshots of Nimbus and I'll follow this (https://launchpad.net/nimbus-ubuntu) project on Launchpad.

For Nimbus, I suggest making more Nimbus-compliant icons. I hope, it's possible to have Nimbus-compliant icons on Pidgin and other apps that need it. A consistent look would really be nice. It's not a problem for OpenOffice.org though because its Galaxy icons look right on Nimbus.

I'd like to borrow this for use in the nimbus-ubuntu project: https://launchpad.net/nimbus-ubuntu if that's all right with you.

I'm also a newbie - not having run a python script (at least not that I'm aware of), could you please tell me exactly how to do it. I think the object, in my case, is to determine what icons are in gnome that are not in nimbus, since we will have to find the equivalent in nimbus that we can link to gnome. Thanks for your help.

Not bad themes at all.

Talk about necroposting, though

I'm probably daft, but I'm also a relative newbie. What is 'necroposting'?

Nevermind, I found the answer:

necroposting

On a message board, posting something irrelevent on a really old topic to bring it to the top of the list topics. name comes from the fact that you are bringing it back from the dead, thus Necro. a practice common among n00blars.

from here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=necroposting

:) Well somebody suggested talking about Nimbus in this thread and staying out of the Shiki Colours thread so I did. Didn't bother checking the dates though.

The OP asked us to use this one for Nimbus. There is a second, identically named thread for Shiki.

We're just obliging.
