There is an interesting article about these drivers now - it seems they are now working quite well on most cards up to the 6 series, and will hopefully soon have 7 and 8 sorted out.

Excellent! The Nouveau driver seems to be coming along nicely. I wish these guys all the goodwill and luck in the world, though I myself do not have an NVidia card.

It seems the publicity has done them good. *proud smile*

Wonder if it'll get included into Gutsy, would be nice especially if they finally sort out GPU throttling and suspend.

throttling would be really nice...

I guess nouveau could work in any of three directions couldn't it?
one be really good, in its own right (this would be ideal)?
kick nvidia in the *** and get them to open a little of source or get on some better closed source drivers?
allow nvidia to bow out of linux alltogether?

Will these drivers allow me to run compiz on a Geforce FX5500?

they are still very much experimental, and probably will require compling etc. if your up for the work out, give em a go.

it might be easier to just purchase a 6200?

Nouveau can't do any 3d yet besides glxgears, right?

If they support 2d and Xen for a pair of 7300s I would switch.

The article mentions Fedora.
Fedora has no viable NVIDIA option without external repositories.
Without a laptop I would have ditched it without ever seeing X.

Not even remotely possible. It will probably be about a year or so before drastic changes are seen.

You are probably right I would so much like to see an on demand profile for my nVidia card. Right now I'm wishing I stuck with Intel but at the time I wanted to play with Compiz and it would only work on nVidia :( (this being a laptop it's no easy switch).
