View Full Version : How do I make Ubuntu look like vista?

I want to make Ubuntu look almost exactly like Vista.

Of course like most, I see it pointless to actually use this theme everyday, but on the times I want to fool people that it is Vista ... i want to be able to do it properly.

So does anyone know of any themes (gtk, emerald, boot splash, gdm, etc) that can help me in making it look exactly like vista?

:)

There are many Vista-ish themes on gnome-look.org. Have a look there. Even beryl themes that look like aero.

For GTK2 theme, you can try Elegance - http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=44495
For window borders, there is a good beryl emerald theme "Vista-Linux"- http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=42875
For Icons, you can try nuoveXT - http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/nuoveXT?content=26448
or there are loads of vista/longhornish icons at deviantART.

Edit: Here is an article for making Ubuntu look alike Vista - http://gnomestyle.blogspot.com/2007/05/make-ubuntu-look-like-vista.html

Stop trying to fool people into thinking ubuntu is like windows.

If you try and fool people into this, then they will only be disappointed when things don't work how they're used to.

Ubuntu is not windows and has its own merits. We aren't competing.

Don't forget that it's not just the look. It's the feel as well.

So... set up lots of cron jobs to run several CPU intensive tasks - updatedb is a good one. Then Ubuntu will run really s...l...o...w...l...y and it will feel just like Vista.

but for vista, most people only know about the look and don't know about the unfeatures that vista comes with.

I think this might actually work, but I think it is still bad, since it could give people a good impression of vista, and I don't want that to happen.

Subproblem #3a: There is a culture
I didn't like this part of the article too much, there are unstable software versions but they are most likely not gonna be released to official repositories until they are stable, and so and so.

Problem #6: Imitation vs. Convergence
but this section is gold enough that makes the whole article worth it.

OMG that's awesome! .... so making it run so much slower than usual... making it look a bit off form vsta (like missing out the top of the orb on start menu)... :P

You're seriously trying to make your computer look like Vista, and slow it down to the extent it feels like it?

Why not just buy it?

Cos he's doing it for a bit of fun!

Jeeze, why are you and the other mod dude having a go at him? Don't people in the UK understand humour? Even an Aussie like me enjoys the idea. :)

This has nothing to do with what the OP has asked. There are correct times to invoke the LNW argument, but bringing the issue up whenever a user dares to make the slightest connection between Windows and Linux is absurd.

Put the Vista DVD in the drive and press the "Install" button.

Oh, come on people. The guy is just asking a simple question - He wants to make ubuntu look like vista. So what's the big deal!? Why the heck did this thread turn into a windows Vs. linux thread? If the thread-starter didn't like ubuntu, he'd be using something else.

And if he wants to fool people into thinking that he's using Vista, I think thats his business. Why do you care?

You could run KDE, try to find a theme that looked like XP, and use the Nack window border for Emerald. Nack looks like an XP window border.

I'm sure that there is a KDE skin or theme for the tool bar in KDE.

Try looking at kde-look.org.

For open and close animations, you can make Beryl's Glide #1 and Glide #2 look similarly to Vista. When you get this done please post all the icon sets/themes/settings you did and maybe someone can make this into an automatic shell script. :)

I took a look at that link, but I don't understand how to implement it all.

{What is GTK, and how can I implement the GTK and Beryl Theme?)

I think making it look like Vista to show people that a properly programmed OS can do all the GUI stuff Vista does on existing hardware is a good idea.

It shows Ms up to be the chumps that they are.
