Pretty much the same as last month (except on Arch instead of Feisty). Details are in the third shot:

I'm liking Gutsy, but since Compiz isn't working on my card properly yet, I'm keeping it simple.

Pretty much the default KDE, I only played a bit with the colours. Not exactly the most stylish thing on earth, but it's easy on the eyes ;)
There are a few more things that I have to tweak to get it consistent (like the Opera theme and I have to find a darker icon theme), but it is fine like that, too.

maybe one of you guys/gals know this:

last week i saw a desktop sreenshot 'somewhere' around the forum which had an all-black glassy look. i remember it showed a number of windows, one of them being a skinned audio player (might be xmms). the fonts/text were either (slightly fluorescent) yellow or whitish.

i've been searching my *** of the last hour or so trying to find it back (i also skimmed through the 71 pages of the june desktop thread), but to no avail. i can't seem to find it back anywhere.. :(

does anyone recall this screenshot and maybe has an idea where to find it?

TIA :)

Dark Star and m.musashi asked about sys info in the terminal in the June thread for this screenshot. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/58790952/
I've attached a txt file. It was written by iphitus from another forum I used to mod at for years. Rename it from
info.txt
to
info.sh
and execute
sh info.sh
I just put in my home directory because that's where the terminal opens located at. Otherwise,
sh /path/to/info.sh

edit as needed.....

Themes: Salocin Linux's default theme (http://salocinlinux.org/downloads/index.php?dir=salocin-themes/) (for metacity)

Wallpaper: Aurora Borialas (see godd4242's post below)

Icons: Glass (Salocin's default Icon set) (http://salocinlinux.org/downloads/index.php?dir=salocin-themes/)

Programs:
Compiz Fusion (window manager) (emerald not used)
Tilda (drop-down terminal)
Avant Window Navigator (dock)
Screenlets (programs that run on desktop)

Modifications to GNOME:
GNOME Panel is not expanded (can be done via right click > properties)
GNOME Panel is not seen when autohidden (used this guide (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=170864)) (Gnome panel is normally autohidden, shown for the screen shot)
Compiz Fusion gives GNOME Terminal true transparency

Well, that is all! I am currently making this into a good looking eye candy desktop for my biz. Any suggestions on what I should add?

EDIT: I updated my screenshot (I just modded it). List of pictures (from left to right): Several apps open, including a tabbed (by Compiz Fusion) Text editor and Dictionary; The desktop without anything open (except screenlets and Avant Window Navigator); Compiz Fusion's Cube with my desktop and a black-to-blue gradient in the background.

Also, I do NOT recommend using Compiz Fusion until it is fully released. At this point, it is still alpha software, and not everything will run as planned, so please, don't use it if you don't want anything to go wrong.

Changed icons (areo) and Gtk Theme (Murrina Red)

I keep saying that for those ancient computers that don't support Compiz or Beryl, E17 is the way to go ;)

It's amazing what this little Desktop Shell can do on it's own

Again, Arch Linux btw.

I don't mess with my Ubuntu Desktop so much right now, mainly because i'm rarely @ home and I'm switching to Arch when I have the time ;)

Beryl / Emerald theme manager = borderless with some touched up shadows.

Well, I got a bit fancier now that I have my new computer, just haven't had time to do much more.

Wallpaper - Came in a GTK Pack http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/LiNsta2?content=43054
Beryl & Emerald - Theme is TiSkin Classic (Comes with it, I believe)
Avant Window Navigator - http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/
Conky - http://conky.sourceforge.net
Screenlets - http://hendrik.kaju.pri.ee/screenlets/
Icon theme - http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/OsX_MoD?content=54851

The systray is just random stuff such as Exaile, Deluge and Pidgin.

EDIT - Oh, ignore the CPU Temp for my Dual Core. I've been too lazy to fix the .conkyrc so it's some randomly high number. LOL.

The basic philosophy here is, I have a widescreen laptop, but most of my data (PDFs, etc) are still vertical... so why not rearrange the space a bit?

It's standard Kubuntu, with:
* The wallpaper replaced with a 1920x1200 crop (by me) of this Hubble image (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2007/16/image/a/)
* The panel made vertical, 72px wide and a second identical panel added (I wish KDE would let me make those taskbar buttons taller)
* All major fonts replaced with Bastardus Sans (http://www.dafont.com/bastardus-sans.font) (which is pretty with the default antialiasing, but doesn't come in bold or italics)
*Kicker-applets installed for the mixer and storage media applets
*The new Crystal iconset (http://www.everaldo.com/crystal/) by Everaldo (a few icons, such as the AIM one [really Pidgin], the 'web' one [Opera] and the Laptop [actually Home] were swapped for Crystal icons just because they looked better)
*Panels locked so I can hit logout by just scrolling to the top-right corner of the screen.

Since I posted this I've reduced the size of the default Konqueror font; it looks better to me now.

I think I will too but I don't know if I'll like it because it hides 60px more of my terminal window that I keep in the top right, as you can see. The 30 or so pixels at the bottom isn't much to sacrifice IMO =\

Oh well. I'll try it, see the 1st attachment.

Basically it's the default feisty theme/colors with a windows-esque panel layout. I'm not too adventurous and I like kubuntu feisty's default look. The pictures in the bottom right of the screen are album covers. It's an amarok script that shows the currently playing song's album cover on the desktop. I got it here: http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Scripts

Here is my basic one for this month. Following the usual pattern, icons are Buuf. The theme is Glossy.

Cannot remember were I got the wallpaper. Just google Fallout 3 screenshots. That should find it.

The running apps are XMMS (playing Evil Robot Radio via Streamtuner), and Dosbox running the game Wasteland.

That one looks CLEAN! I like it (except for there being no AWN, for me that makes it less usable). Anyway, good job :)

This is a tutorial similar to what I use. PLEASE NOTE: You need a compositing window manager for AWN to work. I think Stable Compiz will work (if you go the compiz fusion route, which I DON'T recommend, you have to get the development version of AWN).

I`ve installed AWM successfully from source, but I`m not quite sure of what the point is in using it...
You can switch programs, but isnt there the taskbar already made for this purpose. Can you add launchers for programs?

July 3rd, 2007, 03:43 PM
The left side of AWN is meant to be used with Launchers. Just drag one from your menu onto it. Also, it is very handy with some applets (I got the garbage can applet to work, others don't yet). You can add applets via right click > add applet.

It's fluxbox w/rox and adesklets. Which means I have to set the wallpaper in both feh and rox for the transparencies in adesklets to work correctly. (Anyone have a work around?)

I'm running two desklets. YAB and WeatherForecaster.

I think I accidentally cut off the top of the image. But oh well.

I still have to configure YAB to how I want it.

All the information is in the screenshots (I hope) :)

I'm not running any fancy 3D stuff (even though Compiz Fusion looks really cool), due to my ATI graphics card which doesn't seam to play nice with any compositing window manager -- and lack of sufficient Linux experience * to fix this.

Does anyone, by the way, know how to replace the Ubuntu icon in the bottom-left corner? Like is done here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2964287&postcount=108) (in the top-left corner), for example (Frank Zappa was one brilliant mofo, by the way, The Torture Never Stops must be one of my all-time favorite songs). And could anyone please tell me how to remove the hard drive icons from the desktop? Thanks a bunch.

* In this case 'experience' could probably be replaced by 'willingness to search the forums.' Unfortunately, I am very lazy.

The easiest way is to change your icon theme to one that uses a custom logo (for instance, by using Tango Generator).

The hard way is to locate and replace the correct distributor-logo.png files spread throughout your computer:

I tried out beryl. I thought it was good because it seemed to take some graphics jobs off the CPU and onto the graphics processor. However, all the flashy effects were just annoying to me, so I turned those off. However, things didn't work quite like normal like movie players and openGL stuff and some other thing, and I couldn't configure it so that doubleclicking on a window's title bar would minimise the window... a total deal breaker.

However, things didn't work quite like normal like movie players and openGL stuff and some other thing, and I couldn't configure it so that doubleclicking on a window's title bar would minimise the window... a total deal breaker.

Emerald Theme Manager > Emerald Settings tab > Titlebar Double-Click Action > select Minimize

I know what you mean, I couldn't bear to not be able to Maximize/Restore by double-clicking the titlebar but it's right there and I'm lovin' me Beryl now ;)

I found a vista theme in gnome-look and changed all of the blue highlights and accents to a ubuntu orange. I wasn't able to show the orange glow w/ mouse over on the panel buttons or scroll bar when taking a screenshot.

I want to play with the menubar stuff a lil more too.

Well thanks, I wanted to try AWN but forgot the name before, thanks for reminding me. By the way, using the built in AIGLX versus XGL fixes the OpenGL issues (usually) and you can run games transparently (meaning w/o any other overhead NOT as in visual transparency) in fullscreen and what not.

[Edit]
Just installed the latest release of avant (from source) and nothing works. The navigator itself segfaults and i get python errors for all its utilities.

I used these debs: http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/static/misc/packages/awn214reflect/
I'm not sure if they are the same that you installed, but with these the reflection effect is included.

You can't access reflection settings from the gui yet, you have to run gconf-editor, go to apps/avant-window-navigator/bar and add these keys (if they're not already there): "angle" and "icon_offset"
For angle I set the value to 40 and for icon_offset to 10. You can experiment with these two settings.
Note: The reflection is in fact always there, you'll only see it when the icon_offset value is higher than 0.

The default ATi driver in Gutsy will now let me use Compiz and AWN. Hurrah!

Nothing special, just some stripes, Tango and Murrine. Wallpaper from a pack on dA. Not sure why Gutsy has made my fonts so tiny, though.

Nope, if you right click on the folder and select "Properties", you can change the icon either by clicking on the existing one (it's in a box on the first properties tab) or by dragging the image you want for that folder into that box. :KS

Is there a way to make the upper panel's text white?

Is there a way to make the upper panel's text white?

edit your gtkrc file, and put something like this at bottom of file:

# panel stuff
style "mypanel"
{
xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0
# uncomment line bellow and put path of a png for panel background if you want
# bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "panel-bg.png"
fg[NORMAL] = "#ffffff"
fg[PRELIGHT] = "#ffffff"
fg[ACTIVE] = "#353535"
fg[SELECTED] = "#353535"
}

class "*Panel*" style "mypanel"
class "*Notif*" style "mypanel"
class "*Tray*" style "mypanel"
class "*Applet*" style "mypanel"
class "*Manager*" style "mypanel"
class "*Netstatus*" style "mypanel"
After, that logout/in gnome should reload your theme and do the trick.

themes are located in two places:
wide:

/usr/share/themes/
or userspace:

~/.themes

found the theme you use in one of these two place, this is a folder with the name of your theme:

<yourtheme_name>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

hope that helps

Here's my latest GNOME (fluxbox will follow once it's to my satisfaction...)

GTK: Smoked Glass (gnome-look)
Metacity: Clearlooks Alternative (gnome-look)
Icons: Micro (gnome-look)
Background: "clouds like silk" from interfacelift
Other: Conky with Zekton font, Kill Bill Desktop icons from iconfactory.com (extracted using icotools)

Ok, heres mine.
Theme: Feisty New Human from Gnome Look
Compositor: Compiz Fusion
Icons: Tangerine
Dock: SVN Compiled AWN with Patch for Rotation like Leopard dock
Desktop: Dawn of Ubuntu w/ Conky
I don't know what happened in picture 2. That black wasn't there before the screenshot.

I just was going for a nice, tastefully glossy desktop theme, sorta along the lines of OS X but not a clone of it.

Still pictures really don't do it justice, its quite smooth and well themed

I had the last theme I posted (not long ago) for a long time... time for a change:KS
I want to use Conky but I don't know how... I wanted to put it just above the trash icon (only one line showing, for example, Cpu, memory and MPD) can you help me out? (maybe I should open a new thread?)

Beryl: Tango-Fox
GTK2: Murrina Fancy Candy
ICONS: Tango-Generator
DOCK: Avant-window-manager
APPS: Nautilus, Gimmage, Last-Exit
