Most people use a large image as their wallpaper, but sometimes tiling patterns can look quite sleek as well. They can also be very nicely used as file-manager backgrounds.
There was a nice wood pattern posted on the forums not too long ago, but I no longer have it saved. Here are two patterns that I use for my file manager:
