I would say most of the world plays football with a round ball. But here in the USA we prefer to be different and what we call football is mostly played with the hands.

We all know football is played with a round ball.

The part about 'foot' should give that away. All the other games played with a egg shaped ball are mostly played with the hands.

Thats Heart of Midlothian of course, which is one of the 3(2?) Edinburgh teams back home in Scotland.

Down here south o the border though.........Well i like seeing all the (ahem?)home teams do well over in Europe but i like to see Man-U do their thing in the premiership.I think the last time hearts made Europe they had just enough time to grab a bit of duty free before they were on their way home again.:(

Wrong, professional NFL footballs are made of leather with a rubber bladder inside.

For what it is worth, American football players, especially of the professional variety, ARE MONSTERS. I would LOVE to see a rugby team go up against the defensive line of any NFL football team. These guys are designed to be the biggest, meanest sportsman on Earth--it's not a spectacle. The fact that you have pads on doesn't do much when a 400 lb man that can bench press 600 lbs is running at you at full-steam. The pads are not for protection, it is to hide the fact that they are trying, underneath it all, to kill each other.

If I had to choose between a 320 lb. defensive linebacker wearing 70 lbs. of hard plastic padding running at me full throttle and a 200 lb. Rugby player, I think I'll take my chances with the Rugby player, whether we're just "copying" you or not.

But that's just me;)

We in the Linux community support choice, do we not? Therefore, we do not judge others by whether or not the version of football they play is with a round ball, or an oblong ball. Or, by whether or not pads are worn. I was raised with football being played with an oblong brown ball, and the guys wore pads. About junior high age, I kept hearing about this thing called soccer, which was going to become big in the US. They were starting a pro team called The Force in Cleveland, OH. That was my first real introduction to what I later found out was called football elsewhere in the world.

I'm not a big fan of soccer-style football, but I do not think anyone can be called wrong for liking it. Likewise, I don't feel anyone should be judgemental of the folks in the US who were raised to enjoy a game of their own.

Yesterday we beat Mexico for the "Copa de Oro". We're sending a young team to play in America's cup (no Donovan, Beasley, etc.), so I don't expect we'll do all that well. Nevertheless, being 16th in the FIFA rankings isn't all that bad, especially since the ball is round, and we play much better when the ball is a little pointy. It's a North American thing. Go Pats!!

Well, what you quoted was said because someone was arguing that rugby players are tougher. In American football, there are different positions that different types of people play. The linemen are usually big, and sometimes running backs are stout. But there are other positions, such as wide receiver, tight end, corner backs, and safeties, where it pays to be slim, trim, and fast.

Marvin Harrison is one of the wide receivers for the Colts, and he is a work horse. I'll bet he could give some of your rugby players a run for their money.

The reason there are more breaks and less constant running in American football is because there is more strategy involved.

There's more to AF than u guys think, and I say this as an ex-rugby player.

Consider these three differences between the games:

1) set-pieces

- In rugby, set-pieces are used (in the modern game anyway) primarily as a means of restarting play, with the art of retaining possession through several phases being responsible for the creation of the space to score tries.

In american football all play is from set-pieces. Whatever space is created has to be done from a static position and against an opposition that is perfectly aligned. Intrinsically more difficult.

2) specialisation

- In modern rugby a player has to be as good at both defense and attack; gone are the days of uncoordinated forwards and fragile backs. Most everyone has some bulk and mobility, and can play in a few positions. The speed of the game actually encourages mobility and versatility.

- In AF specialisation is in every aspect of the game, and it makes sense to expect an added proficiency due to such specialisation.

3) Rules of engagement.

- In rugby high tackles and shoulder charges are deemed dangerous and are not allowed.

- In AF many tackles are shoulder charges and any height seems to be allowed. (That's why the padding and helmets I guess).

So I'm arguing that AF is, contact for contact, a whole lot more physcial. No wusses there.

As for matching them against each other, the same points above suggests a 'horses for courses' situation, so I don't think cross-over is actually feasible.

We had a rugby kicker, Naas Botha, who had a trial run at an american football team as their kicker, but I dont think it went all that well.

.

Hey, wait a minute. The only people that drive on the left side are former British countries who picked up the bad habit from their colonizers (just like with cricket). The rest of the world drives on the right (and hates cricket):)

Oh yeah: Basketball FTW!

I'm 100% certain there are way more cricket players/fans out there than for baseball. Why the big gloves, can't catch a ball ?

Ha! Well, you won't hear me defending baseball. Though I do sometimes watch it, I admit it is very boring. And cricket does have it's peculiarities (to me at least) that make it somewhat interesting. But I like to make fun of it every chance I get.

And honestly, I had this argument with a flatmate and bet him that he couldn't think of any countries that like cricket that aren't former British colonies. We eventually came up with one. Surely if a sport has some redeeming qualities, you don't have to conquer a people just to get them to play it:)

dickMoi? Calme-toi, it's sport not war. With all the fun that's being made of the sports we hold dear here in north america (which I certainly don't take personally), I should be allowed to direct some back in good fun.

Have you ever seen the differences in how the ball is pitched and hit between the two games? I'd like to see you play a real game of baseball with good players and not wear a glove. I've done it briefly and it doesn't feel too good on the hand.

Cricket may be more popular worldwide, but it's child's play compared to a real game of baseball.

So, like 6? Out of 33. Hmm. And if cricket in those "Associate Member" countries is as popular as it is in Canada, I wouldn't really count them. Don't take me seriously, I'm sure cricket's a fine sport. That I vow to never watch. Actually, true story, I'm going to play cricket sometime this summer. I've been promised that we get to drink beer while we're on the field... Is it called a field?

Best not go driving in Japan thenCurses! You know, before I posted I looked at all the countries that drive on the left to see if my assertion was true and gambled that no one would think of Japan.

So, Thierry Henry is going to Barcelona. Anyone care/heartbroken/elated? (trying to stay on topic, lest I get called a **** again)

Yes I have. The pitching & bowling (fast bowler) velocities of the ball is about the same. I cannot get any info on the velocity of the ball after it has been hit with the bat though.

Aberdeen have just lost their captain Russell Anderson to Sunderland for a measly £1 million. I am gutted to say the least... but I wish him well.

Maybe not but I think you have to be american to like it. I've tried watching it before but i battle and change channels.

You just have to know and understand the rules. IME a sport becomes accessible and fun only when you understand exactly where the difficulties/challenges lie. Once you see all the nuances there is always something happening, even during the stoppages.

I used to watch the Superbowl until my buddies got married. For some reason it became uncool to watch through sunday night till monday daylight. :)

I must admit though that I would love to actually go to a baseball game in one of the big stadiums. I just want to experience the atmosphere etc.

I went to a college game in LA in '82. Electric atmosphere and a lot of fun. I recommend the hot roasted nuts (cashew?) and the chilli-dogs. Awesome.

And no wardrobe malfunctions that I can recall.

And that is why the rules must be as simple as possible :)

I don't buy that at all. According to that map, all Americans like American football and nothing else. And all of those other countries like soccer, and no other sports. You can't base anything off of that.

Anyone who says otherwise is being unreasonable. That doesn't mean American football isn't a great sport in its own right.

That map is slightly wrong. According to it. On Venezuela, Cuba and stuff they play baseball, wich is wrong they play softball, those are two different games, like rugby and that other stuff. USA folks like to change the names to everything.

You're definitely not from the US, then. Even people here who hate football wouldn't think it's uncool to watch the Superbowl.

But I wouldn't want to stay up all night to watch it, either.

i've figured it out! i know why americans play sport that no one else plays!

do you remember when you were younger, and you would be playing a game with all the other children. then the kids that are losing become bad losers. so they run off, and create their own little game that the other children arent allowed to join in on. its just like that!

Either that, or it's like when you played with all the other kids, and they all treated you like crap and like you don't know anything. So you run home crying and your parents tell you that you can have fun without them if they're going to treat you that way.

The 'uncool' was more the all night (SA is 6 to 9 hours behind) aspect, and maybe a little monday being a work day too.

But what else can I say, my friends got married before their personalities settled.

Just to set things straight...
American Football (for those who play soccer) is the real football and hereafter referred to as such.
College Football is the real Football.
SEC Football is the real College Football.

So, SEC Football is the real football... ;-)

Hope that settles everything...
