This is a solid-state Tesla coil.

The primary runs at its resonant frequency in the 41 KHz range, and is modulated from the control unit in order to generate the tones you hear.

this is soooooooooooooooo cool.

I'd never seen a tesla coil before now I'm frankly terrified. Who's crazy idea was that? All the same though it is pretty amazing.

Who's idea? Nikola Tesla:

About 100 years ago Nikola Tesla invented his "Tesla Coil"

Dude!!!! I can't believe you don't know Tesla. He was working at the same time as Edison and has been mostly eclipsed by him. His ideas were completely out there though, the Tesla Coil is in essence a death ray. He also had designs for terrestrial power transfer and a huge number of others. Mythbusters tested one of his designs and deemed it feasible. That man was ahead of OUR time not to mention his.

If I remember correctly, he also either pioneered or delved deeply into early robotics. Some of his work was focused towards weaponry, and one of his designs was to use his tesla coils to electro-charge the atmosphere, either taking out aircraft, or (not sure how) directing the charge back to the ground at some point to act as a distance lightning strike weapon.

Incredible stuff, but he was constantly turmoiled by the fact that his innovations, which could help mankind, were only funded by the military who wanted to turn them into weapons. He needed funding to do more research, but didn't like it being used for military application. (The elector-cloud thing was one such occasion, because I think that was how he wanted to do power transference between locations...by statically charging the atmosphere, and objects at a distance could draw upon it as a source of power...but, the military wanted him to make a weapon out of it. They also wanted him to weaponize it so it could create earthquakes across the globe at strategic locations.)

As far as Edison, he was pretty innovative, but later in his career, he was kind of a jerk. He insisted that DC current be used instead of AC, and went so far as to electrocute an elephant using DC current to try to make some point (can't remember it too clearly...it was an old article I read in Discover magazine.)
