So I guess it's not true what they say - once you try black, you might still go back?

If Google (official) adopted the option then it would work, but the current Black Google is just not full featured enough.

Google could have a color palette selector and let you select any color you wish.

Eye strain is least when we have yellow (right shade) on dark grey.

White on Black is more straining than the standard one.

I use the stylish extension in Firefox, and there is a dark google available for that. It's cool.

Anyone else seen/using this?

It's beautiful. Great if you're using a Dark Ubuntu skin and want a different homepage. ;)

Bit dark for my liking, I'm sticking to regular Google, plus not a fan of the green search text, etc. :)

Check it.

Why not use stylish plugin with firefox? It can change the website's look including google to your liking. I use it to darken my google page. As well as Wikipedia and a few others.

I prefer dark colors and I would use it. Had I not shortcuted google's search to my Firefox and Opera browsers.

Being able to type "g whatever I'm looking for" in my address bar is nice. :)

I don't if it's mentioned before but today I learnt about Google's twin :Blackle. It's all in black for energy saving. It is said that a pc using google everyday can save 750MWatt in a year.I don't know if it's true but I do like black and I'll use it!

I think I read that a full black screen will consume more energy than a full white one, in a TFT monitor. BBC or something, can't remember.

Blackle is nice though for darker themes.

That's true. On CRT and plasma displays it's the opposite.

CRT and plasma uses power to create lit pixels on the screen, while LCD displays have a constant backlight and then use power to create dark pixels to block/color that backlight.

In either case using that search page wouldn't really make much difference unless you have the search page open major part of the time you have the computer powered. If you wish to save energy there are much better ways, simply turning the display brightness a bit down would make a huge difference compared to replacing your search page with a different colored one..

I was curious about this myself so we pulled out a watt meter (http://cableorganizer.com/electricity-power-meter/)and tested it. Guess what? Blackle uses more power on an LCD monitor than does Google. It's actually about 4 watts more. Check out the video at: http://cableorganizer.com/electricity-power-meter/

Let's dispel the myth once and for all.

You need to get the Stylish Extension for Firefox.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

Once you have it installed, you will notice an icon in the corner of the browser on the statusbar. right click it, and click 'find styles for this page'.

Alternatively, go to http://www.userstyles.org and look through the site styles. There are two for ubuntuforums, and a whole load for google.

I actually posted a few days back about the new forums grey skin.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=552270

it's in two pieces due to being so big.

I also have a dark grey Digg.com, and a dark slashdot.

This extension is a great way of removing ads as well, and the sites do not detect that you are actually not seeing the ads, as it still loads them in the background, but does not display them. For digg, this means I have the no ads skin and the grey skin.

I have also just coded a grey reddit skin , but have not released it due to being buggy with the page images.
