Lately, I've discovered that Abiword, Gnumeric, and Epiphany, amongst other apps, allow me to get my work done just as well as OpenOffice and Firefox while significantly improving my computer's performance. Granted, I have 1.5GB RAM, but I notice that especially when running Firefox my performance drops off. Are there any other lightweight applications for different tasks that you guys can recommend (not for me, but for anyone interested)?

I've also switched from using GEdit for most coding and general editing (as I would Kate or KWrite in KDE) and Bluefish for HTML coding to using Mousepad for very general editing, which I prefer to Tomboy notes, and Bluefish for all of my coding. And GNU Paint (gpaint) is more than sufficient for the majority of my quick idea sketches. I reserve Inkscape for fancy drawings.

Isn't that how Windows works?

But it's good to have enough free that your computer doesn't jam up when you throw something unexpected at it. I'd say that 1.6GHz Pentium M with 1.5GB RAM is sufficient for anything, and I can run Firefox, GIMP, OpenOffice, Rhythmbox (playing music) a terminal or two, Bluefish, and gFTP all at once without too many problems, but when I start switching windows quickly, launch Inkscape, switch desktops, etc is when I really notice that the apps I'm running are weighing down my system.

^ ^ To the rescue ^ ^

Thanks!

But everyone, feel free to discuss. I think there's too much emphasis on OpenOffice, and that were it not for the need for compatibility with MS Office (which needs to be heavily addressed, as MS Office makes no attempt at working with OpenOffice or any other FOSS office suites), other word processors such as KOffice and Abiword would be far more popular.

MS Office has no reason to work with Openoffice.

However, if OOo stopped supporting MSoffice I'd prolly stop using it. I want to be able to transport my files to other pcs...for printing, turning into school, ect
