What programs are out there to make animated gifs? I really just need to use text or text overlayed on top of an image. But if the software can also make gifs out of movie files that would be great too! I know gimp can do something but I just can't figure it out :(

The Gimp tutorials pages are pretty good. I found Gimp a bit daunting until I went through a couple of the tutorials and now I feel a lot more competent with it.

Well, to make gifs out of video files you need a combination of avidemux and gimp. First, use avidemux to cut a segment of the video and save the selection as jpeg files. Then you use GIMP by dragging the jpeg files into gimp which organizes them from A-B. After that you can resize the image and save it as a .gif file(choose animated).

I tried to follow that several times to no avail. I will keep trying I guess :p

It is good to hear that only avidemux is needed to import vids. I will play with that too:D

If you want to use the commandline, you can just use mplayer.

I don't have the exact code I used back when I did this, but here's a thread (http://www.iconbar.com/forums/viewthread.php?threadid=10408&page=1) on another forum that will give you the basic idea.

You can also use the GIMP Animation Package (GAP). It's a bit confusing at first, but I think it may be more efficient than that method once you get the hang of it.

Will GAP help with the dithering?

BC using GIMP alone jack up all the colors.....

This thread is 5 years old, I doubt you'll get much help from it.

Back to sleep it goes..
