Hi,
I noticed this program:
http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/promo/nuke.html
It has a Linux version, I tried it out.
But I can't seem to get WHAT is this software.
Anybody knows?

Read this:

This is what that program does :)

(and then lots of extra fancy things)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuke_(software)

it's a compositor, for doing special effects for movies and whatnot, an example of compositing would be using bluescreens/greenscreens

I see. I guess it's nothing an ordinary user would benefit from. But it's still great to see it's ported to Linux! ;)

I noticed in Wikipedia that there is a similar program called Shake, from Apple. The surprising thing is that Apple ported Shake to Linux :)

At first I apologize for bumping such old thread - couldn't resist. ;)

As for Nuke - it was always targeted as multiplatform, so there wasn't any "porting" to Linux.
And Shake is actually UNIX native, then bought by Apple and ported to OSX. Funny thing, it still work better and more stable on Linux. Oh, and there once was a MS Windows port, though killed at 2.5 version. Now "shake is dead", as Apple works on "next-gen" app and this one will be OSX only.

Not much loss, as forthmentioned Nuke is develeping quite nicely.

There are other compositors like Fusion, or Adobe After Effects.
http://www.jahshaka.org/ <- Open Source app, hardly a replacement right now, but later - who knows.
