ok, so i had thunderbird open and i clicked preferences. just before the preferences window opened, an image of a sailor flashed in the very same spot. i don't have any pictures of sailors. wtf?

Sounds to me like you have an add-on installed that's doing this.

Perhaps your subconscious is trying to tell you something?

Or it might just be an X glitch. If it has flying icons, it could have flashing sailors too.

That is bizarre. Does it do it every time? Have you tried launching it from the terminal?

it just happened that one time, but there have been some odd flashes in xfce.

Maybe it's an "easter egg" you're not supposed to see.

You say it was in Thunderbird? Maybe it was a virus in an e-mail attachment trying to get onto your system. As far as I know, the Windows Thunderbird is the same as the Linux Thunderbird.

Sounds like an easter egg to me. Might be a virus though.

I doubt it's a glitch in X. Most probably something in an e-mail trying to get into your system. Either that or cocaine's a helluva drug.

meh, cocaine blows (oops! sorry about the pun). anyway, i have thunderbird set for plain text. i'm also getting some glitches in my menu. they're just flashes, so this is still at the 'hm, that's odd' stage.
