Music one may hear in a lounge. Not a 'bar' as such or a 'kids' nightclub. Relaxing music.
My posting of Minor Threat was. . .sarcastic.

Ah you mean wine bar music? Sade (http://www.last.fm/music/Sade?q=sade) will hate me for classing her music as wine-bar but she is one of my favourite singers. ;)

Yippeeeeeeeee I get it now ;) and if you happen to be in a lounge in Malaysia it will most probably be Sheila Majid (http://www.last.fm/music/Sheila+Majid) :)

Pretty much any of the Café del Mar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caf%C3%A9_del_Mar) albums, or for really relaxing stuff, try Ambient Nights (http://www.ambient-nights.org/music.php) (free download.)

Many of the Buddha Bar compilations are not bad, I also like FutureLounge.
As xmastree pointed out Café del Mar is pretty good. Oh and Saint Germain compilations are good too.

Some people say I'm a man of few words, but the fact is that most people talk too much without actually saying anything.
I would hardly call 1600+ posts as the shy and retiring type :lolflag:

Sade is nowhere near lounge music.
For lounge albums, the exotica albums of Martin Deny especially Forbidden Island, anything by Esquivel like Music from a Sparkling Planet, the works of Les Baxter, and Marty Gold's Moog Plays the Beatles.
I would also the add the orchestral pop stylings of Liberace and Percy Faith.
Finally, their was a rebirth of lounge led by the Cocktails (Archer Prewitt of Sea and Cake fame), Love Jones, and Combustible Edison.

Ummm...what? Methinks you need to learn the difference between lounge music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lounge_music) and shoegaze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoegazer_music). MBV is a classic shoegaze band.

Genres are off course nonsense, since only a few records can really be classified into one of the acknowledged genres. IMO there's only good and bad music.
I understand what you mean though, so these are among my favourite records for relaxing:
Saint Germain (anything, but especially his first, From Detroit to Saint Germain)
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Luke Vibert - Yoseph

The term Lounge Music and the louche sound of The James Taylor Quartet go together like a silk smoking jacket and a martini.

I don't necessarily agree with you here. Genres are a useful concept: they allow you to get an idea about the sound/thematic elements of a particular song/band. Every record can be classified into one genre or another, but many albums/bands can also be classified into multiple genres.
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Two very good choices indeed....although I like Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2" better than Vol. 1.
