View Full Version : Bored? Stress test Firefox and Ubuntu

So, you are bored, and sometimes wonder how fast your PC is and how stable Linux is?

Check out this website: www.npi-news.dk (http://www.npi-news.dk)

If your browser and OS can read that site immediately, then your PC passed the stress test. Check out the memory consumption while the page is loading. It surprised me that a web page is allowed to take up that much RAM.

And hey, close all your programs and close ALL documents FIRST... just in case. the responsibility is yours.

Worst website ever.

It renders near instantly but downloading the images takes forever....

But then again, I have two dual-core Opterons in my machine. :D

It's only a download issue, no stress on Firefox or the system whatsoever

Me too, it renders almost instantly, but loading the images takes a while, but that's the internet connection's problem, not the PC's :p.

Arch, I forgot that you guys probably have insane configurations :)

My laptop is two years old (with 700 mb RAM) and this site forced it two its knees for almost 5 minutes, pointer jumping and I almost couldn't close other programs.

I am a little disappointed to learn that Firefox (and probably IE as well) just loads all these images into memory at once? This site could be 4 times as big and just eat up all of your memory?

My computer is pretty new, 1GB RAM, two cores each running at 2.2GHz, and the page renders pretty quickly. So you don't need an insane configuration...

Konqueror + OpenBSD = no problem here :) Page loads in ~15 secs.

WOW !! what a web "page" hardly a page, loaded instantly, I couldn't scroll down and have a look-see fast enough, bizarre.
If you're wondering about your own s-p-e-e-d, look here :
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net/)

7.04 is very fast !!:D

It's not really big enough to test the OS.

The entire page was loaded, including *all* of the pictures in about 10 seconds. And that's on Windows too:shock:

Nothing to do with Win. That's cause you have a good connection, thanks to the good *NIX servers your ISP runs ;)

My ISP runs *Nix servers? Is there a way to find out?

K I had to ctrl+alt+backspace

I have 1gb of ram, but no swap space

It was loading fine, then when it went to 950+MB, my system locked up.

Also tried with Dillo instead of firefox. Rendered pretty damn fast, still 600MB usage though.

My GUI froze almost instantly (reminds me of the old fork() bombs...).

I had to drop down to console (ctrl-alt-f1) and use top to kill the firefox process manually...

Funny thing is, I only learned how to use top about two hours ago...

Glad I did!
